Good present for a keen knitter?

KnittingQuestion · 02/04/2024 14:56

Hello.

If you're a keen knitter, is there anything you'd always love to be given as a gift?
Is there a special wool place or anything you'd always want vouchers for?
Or a type of wool that's extra special? Or a good book? Or... anything else?

TIA!

In case this is of use, it's for a keen knitter who also loves animals - especially cats and birds

I'd steer clear of buying yarn unless you're really sure of what they'd like and also how much to get.

A yarn bowl might be good, you can get some lovely ones on Etsy. Or stitch markers - you can never have too many stitch markers and it's nice to have pretty ones. If you search for cat or bird themed stitch markers on Etsy or similar you'll get loads of hits.

If they do a lot of lace knitting, or anything with charts, then one of these chart keepers would be good. I got one for my birthday last year and it's been really handy.

Knitting Chart Keepers | KnitPro

The chart keeper easily unfolds for use and folds up for storage. Extremely strong magnets keep patterns and charts in place. Available in two sizes Small and Large.

As round suggested, I got my best mate a bowl thing. Helped keep the wool a bit more protected from her cats, she was v happy with it.

Nice knitting bag?

BruceAndNosh · 02/04/2024 15:12

Really nice project bag. Most knitters have several items on the go at once.

Other ideas - you'd have to check with them if they would use it /already have it...., a full subscription to Knit Companion or one of the chart creation sites

Would personalised knitting needles be a welcome thing, or would they generally be rubbish to knit with...? As you can tell, I know almost nothing about knitting....

I bought a cute personalised cloth bag to keep knitting in from NOTHS this year, Mum loves it!

They may be a bit rubbish! They may also be unsuitable, for example I mostly use circular needles so straights would not get a lot of use (though I'd appreciate the thought!)
Agree with previous posters suggestions of project bags...another thing you can never have too many of!

To be honest it depends a lot on budget too.

If you're looking for something small then a set of pretty stitch markers or a teeny tape would be lovely.

Personally I'd never say no to a hand dyed skein in colours that are "me", in a sock weight as I can always find a use for one of those. I'd also love (another) project bag or a yarn bowl.

Book wise it would be very dependent on her tastes, and when so many patterns are available online- it often works out better to buy one pattern rather than a whole book. There are some beautiful book/magazine crossovers - I love The Journal of Scottish Yarns which has a great mix of interesting articles about sheep and patterns.

In terms of vouchers, my preference would be local yarn store which stocks a range of things- from more budget end wool through to hand dyed plus a range of notions. You'd need to give an idea of what area you're in if you'd like a recommendation for one of those though!!

This is all so helpful - thank you so much!

East midlands (near Loughborough) - don't suppose you have any ideas for this?!

Sorry, wrong end of the country for me.

On the project bag front, the one you linked to is lovely if she knits with long straight needles. It might be an age thing (I've only just got my mum converted!!) but a lot of people use circular needles now, the really short ones with a long cable connecting them. Once I switched over to them, my project bag preferences changed to little drawstring pouches as these are much easier to stuff in a handbag or bagpack for transporting.

I have a yarn bowl and it's beautiful and I felt fabulous using it....once, but it's now a trinket bowl.

I would love a voucher but if you do want to get a physical thing

  • nice scissors
  • thread cutter pendant
  • project bag

Wool Warehouse do vouchers

I love Wool Warehouse! I order all my yarn, stuffing and sundry other bits and bobs from them.

countrygirl99 · 05/04/2024 09:07

I love that they send the yarn in organza bags. Good for storing leftover stash by type.

mondaytosunday · 05/04/2024 09:46

I crochet. My sister knits. Yarn is so personal - I really think a voucher to their favourite store is the way to go. I'd love to be able to try out more expensive yarns even if for just one project, but I don't want someone picking it out for me.
