but can't get beyond 2nd line of pattern. How does one dc16 when one has created a ring of only ch6? Was up at four this morning in tears over inability to create a flower. Or a hat. Or ANYTHING. (Am 33 wks pg, should explain a lot.) I think I can cope with the stiches, it's just the patterns that I'm unable to follow. Can anyone help?
Could really do with some sleep tonight!

are you mad?!!!

sorry i can't help as i'm too scared to even try to crochet!!!

itsazoohere · 27/03/2008 21:21

Insane! But have just found youtube tutorials, can feel frustration draining out. But now won't be able to sleep because I CAN crochet, rather than can't. Will expect dds to awaken to hundreds of mishappen flowers!

work them into the hole in the middle of the ring rather than into the actual stitches? or do 2dc into stitch 1, 3dc into stitch 2, 3 dc into stitch 3, 3 dc into stitch 4, 3 dc into stitch 5 and 2 dc into stitch 6.

It was the stiching into the hole thing that I just couldn't grasp. Still can't really comprehend patterns tbh, but dd's now have lovely (ish) flowers to take to school.
Are there any REALLY BASIC patterns around that anyone knows of? Preferably somrthing nice, I just can't get all excited over a jam jar cover. The jam, maybe, bit that's because I can't stop eating. I'd like to make dd3 (!.2yrs) something-might anyone have any links or books of patterns that even I couldn't mess up?

OK, so did you chain 6, then join them into a ring? Then I guess the dc 16 is into the ring?

So - hold the chain ring in your left hand, the hook in your right. Dip the hook into the ring (with the loop still on the hook), hook the yarn and draw it up through the ring. You now have two loops on your crochet hook. Wrap the yarn round your hook again, catch the yarn in the hook and pull it through the first two loops. You now have one loop on the hook, and two threads wrapped round the crochet chain.

Repeat another 15 times! The chain will "disappear" under the loops created by the dc, which will automatically work their way round the chain. You should finish up with a "disc" or flower shape.

Does that help? (If not, youtube tutorials are brilliant!)

I too have taken up crochet (not even pregnant and find it blinking dlifficult). I have found you tube to be very good especially the granny square tutorials. There are others showing you how to make a hat etc - have tried today and have thrown my crochet needle across the room .

just one thing - do not try patterns when your children are around - you will lose your place and you will lose count.

Just crochet in the middle of the ring rather than into the individual stitvhes. I find crochet is actually much faster than knitting once I get going and is also easier to unpick .

Thank you! Have sussed the into the ring thing. Think have got flowers sorted, so am bored now. What's good to try next?
I can't be too ambitious as dd3 now has chickenpox. Just what I need!

blnaket? We call them afghans - start with a cricle or a crocheted square and go round and round and round using up all your spare wool, remembering to do 3 stitches when you turn a corner so it lies flat

dead easy
