I’m new to crochet and trying granny squares. Can do round 1 & 2 of the pattern ok but on the 3rd round (second round of clusters) I have a problem. Pattern reads * 1 ch, miss 3 tr, (3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr) into next ch sp.

My problem is the “miss”, what am I missing? How do I do it?

Sorry if I am being a bit thick, as I said I am very new to this.

thanks

Have you tried YouTube? I know it's cliché but there are some outstanding videos on crochet - Bella Coco - Natazia - GirlyBunches

Welcome to crochet!!

Can you share a photo of what you have done already? Then we can help and explain what to do.

It means skip over (don’t crochet into) the 3 treble from the row below.

The (3tr, 3ch, 3tr) is the corner.

I don’t understand your pattern with the miss either. Usually on a new round you chain 3 (2 to get up to height and one to make the chain space, then start your first cluster of three trebles in the next gap and go on as normal from there. Then that starting chain effectively replaces the 3rd treble crochet in the last cluster when you get back around and you just slip stitch them together. Does that help at all?

Easiest way is to compare to a diagram.

I don't like videos as a lot of modern crocheters hold the hook in a different/funny way. I've been crocheting since the early 1970s and hold my hooks the way everyone else did of that generation and our elders.

Regarding the above diagram, I don't chain between clusters except for the corners.

So from there, do another set of three trebles in the next chain gap (so missing the trebles below). Then chain 2 or 3 and three trebles again. That will give you the next corner.
Give it a try, you will soon see if it looks wrong!

@BlueBell50 I can really recommend the Facebook group Hooked on Crochet UK. Lots of help, support and inspiration.

It needs tidying up but absolutely thrilled with my first granny square. Thank you all for your help.

Thanks also ElleLeopine for the Facebook suggestion. My imagination is now running away with itself with what I might be able to do.

@BlueBell50 that looks fabulous, well done!

If you did 2 chains in the corners, it would make them a little sharper.

Hope you enjoy the Facebook group!

To experienced crocheters:
Is there any advantage to doing the 6ch at the start of the round (= the last treble of the first set of 3 in the corner + 3ch)? Does it disguise the ch better if they're at the end rather than the start of a set of 3? I just join on the side somewhere & start with 3ch, 2tr, 1ch.

To the OP:
Congratulations & having a head full of ideas is exactly what should happen! With grannies, maybe just think of the spaces & remember every side is 3tr, 1ch in each space, & every corner is 3tr, 2 or 3 ch, 3tr, 1ch. The number of spaces per side increases by 1 on each round.

Wait till you find out about 'join as you go' - if you've ever found sewing up knitted things a chore, it will blow your mind!

@ifIwerenotanandroid I really think that doing the join in the corner looks much better, especially if you are doing a solid granny. Why don't you give it a go both ways and see if it works better for you? Also, I would only do chain 5.

@BlueBell50 some people do a 1 chain in between each treble cluster, some don't do one at all. Likewise some do 2 chain in the corner and some 3. This is personal preference and down to your tension as you crochet, so don't be afraid to experiment to see what works best for you.

@ifIwerenotanandroid if I’m changing colours in a granny, I prefer to use a standing treble in the middle of a cluster and then do an invisible finish.
@BlueBell50 that look really neat, well done. Just the pesky ends to sew in. I recommend doing it regularly because it’s the worst job. As said before an extra chain in each corner would square it off better.

The thing I love with crochet is you pick up tricks as you get more experienced and have preferred ways of doing things. Join as you go is the best!
