Wanting to make a crochet temperature blanket. Advice please.

I'm keen to crochet a temperature blanket. Most of the sites/facebook pages I've seen are US based. I'm in UK and looking for suggestions of:

  1. which yarn is best to use that I can get in the UK?
  2. which stitch would you recommend, was thinking double to help stop it getting too long.
  3. how much yarn do I need? Thinking of doing one large enough to be either sofa throw/double bed throw. Obviously would be 365 or 366 rows long, but roughly how many stitches wide would it need. I know I can work it out by doing swatches/using info on the wool labels but would like to hear from experience how much wool roughly people needed.

  4. how did you split the colours e.g 3 degree range. I'm in southern England, it's gone as cold as -3 and as warm as 35.

  5. is there a website where I can get a record the highest/lowest temperature for each day for 2023 or do I need to start from now and where can I get the high/low temperature for the day. I would prefer to do one temperature specific for the south.
    TIA

Stylecraft special dk or yarnsmiths create dk are both great yarns for making blankets. Wool warehouse has a good selection of both yarns.

There's loads on Pinterest or Instagram ranging from moss stitch to granny squares. Dk is probably best, stylecraft always seems a bit thin. Yarnsmiths as above is good or Scheepjes colour craft.

Accuweather has all temps stored

I went up in 5° increments.

no idea on the amount of yarn but it wasn’t loads for mine,

Do you definitely want a stripey blanket? They can get a bit long, and a single crochet stitch may not be very drapey. I've seen some nice ones made from squares, where the inner rounds are the minimum temp and the outer rounds are the max temp. I'll see if I can find a link /picture for you.

I made mine 2 years ago living in SW England . Wanting wool I used Drops fine merino a DK yarn available in lots of colours in 50g balls . I used linen stitch and a 4mm hook, 1 dc snd 1 chain . It ended up about 6’6” and the width of my arms about 250 stitches wide . My colours were 1 for every 2 degrees but one colour for anything under zero and one above 30. I think I used about 30 50g balls . Hard to say as I bought gradually ( winter colours only first ) and had a fair bit of stash left over which I as using for other things

So I did this a few years ago (had to search my posts to find the picture!). I used Caron Simply Soft and didn't like it as much as Stylecraft DK.

I went for squares over stripes as it felt more manageable daily. I think I used Fahrenheit and 5 degree groupings, but honestly can't remember.

Whatever you do, bear in mind that the end result will be massive. This photo is on a king-size bed and it isn't complete - the final one had at least another 6/7 rows, probably more. I ended up donating it to the greyhound charity near me as I had no use for something so massive...

This is my Granny Square weather blanket from Nov 2022 - Oct 2023. I made it in a DK wool with a 4mm hook, all triple crochet, one round per day, so each square is a week. It's ended up about 1.2m x 1m with the border included. I knew there weren't enough weeks in the year to make a pleasing rectangle, so I added the weather we had on a two-week holiday as well.

I'm in South Wales, where the temperature range is not massive - we rarely have daily temperatures below 2C or 3C, and not very often over 25C. Instead, I decided to record by atmospheric conditions (i.e blue sky, sunny intervals, rain etc.) for temperatures of less than 6C, between 6C and 16C and over 16C. I ended up using 18 colours, most of them I didn't use more than 25g of wool and the one I used most still wasn't more than 100g.

You can check for previous weather online with Accuweather, but I mainly used the Met Office to check the temperature and the rest of it was just gazing out of the window.

I loved making it, and am pleased I chose the colours I did.
