I mostly buy online but enjoy buying yarn in person which sadly is few and far between nowadays.

Aldi have a yarn event starting tomorrow and I wondered if it was worth going to have a look?

Rainbow baby ombré yarn £1.29
Aran yarn £1.29
Chunky yarn £1.29
DK yarn £1.29

I crochet.

Check where its manufactured, it was good quality years ago and I used to buy it but they changed manufacturers (originally in Turkey but later years China) and the quality became very poor, a visible difference between older and newer yarns. I've a blanket I crocheted at least 12 years ago in their aran weight tweed yarn which is still used daily, its on the sofa under the dogs and it's still in decent condition but the newer yarn wouldn't put up with that usage or look as good. Also years ago people used to queue up outside and fill trolleys with it, I seen two women fighting over it in a local store but now it usually ends up being reduced because it doesn't sell, if it was still good quality it'd sell out fast). The only one I see sell out is baby chenille but I've never used it so can't comment on it.

It depends what kind of yarn you like and whether you are fussy about quality and about what it's made of, I guess.

OP- where do you normally buy wool from online? I used to like marriners, but only recently found they had shut. I also crochet and use DK yarn for basic rugs I donate to charity. I too find the aldi wool pretty poor quality.

Thank you for that! I would have had a long drive tomorrow morning otherwise!

@Mudflaps I used to like Stylecraft dk but that's gone downhill. I think that was because they changed where it was made.

Thank you.

@AllProperTeaIsTheft I do g mind using acrylic but some are better than others. Deramores own was bloody awful.

@DSD9472 anywhere and everywhere!

Woolwarehouse I guess is the most popular

I did buy from Deramores but the quality of their DK is awful.

I found one recently and have bookmarked it but haven't brought from her yet -

You're right about stylecraft, it's definitely not as good as it was. I'm using Scheepjes whirls at the moment but am going to try their dk next.

I just remembered. Another thing to check is the grams of yarn in the ball. I might be confusing another store, but remember finding balls which seemed good value- to then realised they were only 80g. Aldi had very large balls a few years ago, 400g, BUT, it worked out more expensive than buy 4x 100g balls from my usual shop.

I'm a prolific knitter and have had aldi aran with a bit of wool in fairly recently and it knitted up beautifully for children's jumpers over the winter. Was in what they call cakes, variably coloured, but I have also had their 400gr balls in the past too that were good. Not as keen on the purely acrylic but it is cheap and depends what you want to make out of it. Pretty sure it was all made in Turkey.

I used to use a clearance online shop called kemps but its not been as good since covid so just been using hobbycraft, usually when they have 3 for 2 offers on and aldi as I give most of my knitting away to friends and colleagues with children.

Thanks for heads up I could do with building up my stash😍
