Quick sewing alteration question re piped hem

MrPanks · 18/01/2024 12:13

I have been gifted a beautiful silk dressing gown with piped sleeve cuffs. The sleeves are way too long for me and I wanted to know if it is possible to have them taken up without loosing the piped cuff? Also, would I need a specialist to do this or would it be something most clothing alterations services could do?

Thanks in advance.

If it has turn back cuffs ot could be. Or if it doesn’t it could be altered to have them which would make ot possible.

Without seeing it, it’s hard to say exactly, but it might be possible to take the sleeve up above the cuff, if that makes sense…? If that were the case, it’d be pretty straightforward to do.

This is it.

Thanks for your reply @abbey44 . I'm pleased about that, as the sleeves really are quite long, and as Im only 5ft my arms are very short. I could roll up the cuffs it if would be too difficult, but I would rather not if they can be taken up without loosing the piping.

It’s a typo for “it”!

You just need to fold the sleeve material above the piping down inside the cuff and stitch in place. (press and pin). Get matching thread so your stitches are not too visible and do a row of tiny stitches just beneath the piping to secure it.

HarpieDuJour · 19/01/2024 10:44

That should be fairly straighforward. It looks like the cuff is a separate piece, so could be removed with the piping intact, then the sleeve shortened and (assuming the width still matches) the cuff and piping put back in place. But it does depend on the width of the sleeve and cuff being the same at both points, otherwise there would be some faffing about to be done and you wouldn't get a perfect result.

Thanks everyone, that's great. I will see if someone locally can do it for me. As I've never sewn with silk I dont want to mess it up.

That’s one beautiful dressing gown.

MrPanks · 19/01/2024 11:11

Thanks. It was originally £450, now £125, absolute bargain! They still have some in stock if you are tempted!
