Cutting crochet...

My daughter asked for a long scarf. A really really long scarf. I made it. Except I made it really really really long and now she wants it 20 inches shorter. I crochet it length ways, so can't just unravel the stitches! Either I unravel the whole thing and start over or cut it. Anyone done cut a piece and how do you then bind the edge to prevent a complete disaster?

Never done it as too timid! Have you thought about folding over the two ends to make pockets at each end of the scarf? Or if you are really feeling brave, have a google/YouTube at the art of steeking.
looks fab, I’m a coward, keep us informed!!

Thanks @Alphabet1spaghetti2 she doesn't want it hemmed and the scarf is quite narrow. I have googled it and YouTube but it's all about taking back stitches and one about cutting just shows the result with loose threads - not what you do then! IlBut now I know the term 'steeking' I may have more luck searching!

Honestly if it's narrow and it was straightforward I would just pull the whole thing and redo it. Less hassle in the long run, just make sure you check length with her first 😁

Do you have a sewing machine? You could do two really secure lines of machine stitching and then cut it in between. Not sure how it would look aesthetically, I would be tempted to get her to wrap it round her neck an extra time rather than cutting it!!

Or …. Teach her how to crochet, then she can have things exactly as she wants! (And an appreciation of the work, time and skill required)🤣

Nice suggestions! No sewing machine and the thought of ripping it out 😬😬😵! She won't wear it - but I would! I'll probably have to though.
She has no interest in learning - she's very creative but finds crocheting mind numbingly dull (she's 18 and has better things to do)!

How did she not notice how long this was if you made it longways? The teenagers I know would class it as a Dr. Who scarf and love it.

Whataretalkingabout · 15/01/2024 21:29

Tell her this is it! She will just have to live with it as there is no way you are going to redo it. How can 20 cm on a really long scarf be a bother anyway? Wrap it up and tell her you have done your best job.
And this is the last scarf you will be making her...

Can you tightly stitch/weave across it then cut it then border it both sides?

MarmiteWine · 15/01/2024 21:44

What yarn is it made with? If there's a high wool content then you may be able to needlefelt at the point where you want to cut, and could then add a binding to the cut edges to neaten.

If you have any yarn left (or can get more) I'd strongly suggest making a small swatch to try this out on first.
