DIY wallpaper hanging - just plain foolish or a perfectly conquerable skill?

hello

I have a perfectly straight, smooth new wall, float and set finish sealed with an oil-based primer.

It is not a large area: 1.8 by 2.7 metres

Can someone talk me through hanging non-pre-pasted paper or point me to a divvy's webguide

I thenk you

but that would consist chiefly of the the back of my head and me saying "why won't you stay up, you c*&t??"

surely a tad repetitititive?

oh no

it would be lots of fun for us all

especially if it fell on top of you and covered you in paste

we could all sing 'When father painted the parlour' very loudly

time for sensible answers now, don't make me change my name to HeidiandTrixiismumhunflufffairy to get sympathy

get someone in to do it. Wallpapering is a bitch. (me & dh nearly came to blows. The children were also displaying some unladylike language for a while too!! )

suzywong · 18/03/2008 11:09

hmmm, as I feared
However dh and children would be out.

how bloody hard can it be?

And no one would come in to do such a measly small area, tradesmen are like hens' teeth here, they advertise for plasterers to come to Aus in Liverpool, ffs!

Ok.
these guys are great for all diy
Good luck. And don't say I didn't warn you . . .

TheDevilEatsNestle · 18/03/2008 11:15

Good luck.
And remember overlapping is a hideous crime.

thank you for the link

I will save my fluoxetene ration and when I feel I have enough and all male members of my family are at least half an hour away and I have a suitable bottle of shiraz rose perfectly chilled then I shall begin.

just so long as you stick it on straight and not wrinkly it isn't that hard.

try to work out how many drops you will need and cut them all out first. gather all yoru equipment, plumb line etc. paste teh paper and leave it for about 5 mins before hanging.

i have always found trimming top and bottom the hardest bit, if you have a knife it sometimes drags and if scissors hard to get neat edge.

i hope it isn't patterned, not wise for first attempt. also check that it will stick to your oil-based primer.

suzywong · 18/03/2008 12:02

fishie, thanks for the tips, it is however, very very patterned.

never mind, I reckon I can do it.

thanks everyone

just think of it as very fiddly present wrapping. if you are good at that sort of thing you will find it a breeze.

GrapefruitMoon · 18/03/2008 18:19

I think wallpaper hanging is one of those things that you either have the knack for or you don't... and I am in the first category! I am not brilliant at wrapping presents either and as for putting sticky-back plastic on a book....

Good luck!

grannyslippers · 20/03/2008 17:50

Don't start at the corner it won't be straight. Leave just under a width before plumbing the first drop, paper to the other corner, then hang last drop and trim to fit along the edge.

Course you can do it! I like wall papering, always looks so brilliant when you've finished and changed the room in a day.

suzywong · 21/03/2008 11:58

thank you grannyslippers
you make it sound so simple, but I notice from your profile you are a civil engineer!!!!!
widths and plumbs just trip off your tongue, don't they!

I have since decided to get a pro in, or at least ask my neighbour
