Sizing up wool size - crocheting

I'm planning to crochet a pattern that calls for DK wool, and claims to need a 280m length ball. I would like to do this in chunky wool, do will size up the hook, but how do I work out how much wool to buy? I guess I'll need more than 280m, is there a scaling factor? Or do I just guess and hope!

Once a year because it’s only worn instead of a coat. Knitted in 1997 and still looking good

I’m definitely not a crochet expert, I’m more of a knitter, but as you’ve had no replies about crochet I’ll try to help.

What I would do is look on Ravelry for a pattern similar to the one you’re aiming to make in chunky yarn and see how much that takes.

Do you want the item to be the same finished size as the DK one, so you’ll adjust the pattern or are you going to follow the pattern and end up with something bigger?

What is it you plan to make? Can you tell us the name of the pattern?

This might help. It seems to suggest that ball for ball chunky will have roughly half the metres per 100g of DK. So I would suggest buying at least 560m possibly even slightly more.

Surely if it needs 280m then it needs 280m? Which will be more balls of chunky than it would DK because you get less m per 100g.

But the overall item will be bigger with chunky yarn.

Probably best to do a swatch and guesstimate from that.

But your hook size will be bigger to cope with chunky wool so each stitch will use a longer length of yarn.

Of course! I didn't think of that. Duh. My brain was desperately trying to figure it out.

I disagree. I've never made a sweater but surely the bulkier yarn will mean stitches are a lot bigger so you will need LESS yarn?

It's an amigurumi style animal, and I'm planning on the finished piece to just be bigger as I'm scaling up the hook size. I've gone for twice the amount (for now!), we'll see what happens!
