Knitting gift advice

Hoping for some help please for a Christmas gift for my DM who's recently got back into knitting.

She's already got a full set of needles, stitch counters, etc. I've found a pattern book I think she would like suggesting 'Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Merino,' I'm hoping someone can help to suggest more budget-friendly yarns for the projects. I don't want to overwhelm her with ongoing expenses. Any recommendations for suitable, affordable yarns? Ideally I would get her some yarns to get going with and I don't know what I'm looking for!

Also considering a knitting magazine subscription as an alternative gift—any good suggestions? Open to any other thoughtful gift ideas for a knitter. Grateful for any input!

Have a look at woolwarehouse on line. Brilliant place imo.
A gift voucher might be a good option, as for some knitters half the pleasure of knitting is in the choosing and planning what you are wanting to knit. (Admit that’s the way it is for me, and I’m often told I’m weird). You could print a voucher saying you will purchase yarn up to £x amount from any store on line or in real life if you think that might be give her more options, rather than buying a specific voucher from a store/ on line shop she may not like - we all have our favourite places to get our yarn fix.

Drops yarn from wool warehouse is very affordable yet still lovely to work with

I second a gift voucher idea, choosing the yarn is half the fun

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I understand where you're coming from about the choosing and planning the project being part of the joy, I'm certainly like this with all the crafts I do myself. However, in this case DM would genuinely like the choice taken away and have everything needed to dive straight into a project. Luckily we have very similar tastes so I'm confident picking designs and colours she would like. Great suggestions for the yarn matching website, I'll take a look. Thank you again.

There are lots of very inexpensive acrylic yarns, but if (like me) your DM would prefer natural wool, I second Drops yarn - it's lovely, and amazingly cheap for real wool.

OP have a look at Black Sheep Wools online shop. It's a real shop too, near Warrington, and a brilliant place to visit with a nice tearoom as well.

Anyway they offer a free Betwixtmas pattern for a cowl and wrist warmers and you could buy your mum the wool to go with that as a nice wee project maybe?

Have a look at the website and see what you think.

@justchoose i third, forth, fifth 'whatever' Drops merino & wool warehouse.

there are some lovely kits online too.

i know you said she has a set of needles, but are they bamboo needles? I hate knitting on metal needles now.

Has she got all needles or just a set of straight needles? Circular needs might be something to add. Stichkeepers, cable needles, row counter for thicker needles.

I love the yarn bowls, particularly useful if you have a cat who likes to help by hunting the yarn.
