Make a large tapestry wall hanging?

OK - so the cold might be getting to me, but I was watching a programme the other night showing a lovely old house with tapestry wall hangings to keep the warm in. And I thought. I wonder if I could make one of those?

It would need to be a kit. I can cross stitch and enjoy it - but I'm not creative enough to wing it or design something.

Has anyone done anything like this? Am I mad?

If you would enjoy doing it, why not. They aren't cheap and it might take ages.

Take a look at macrame type wall hangings, they seem to be quite in at the moment. Not sure it will help with the temperature though...

KirstenBlest · 01/12/2023 17:47

Applique might be quicker.

MissPettigrewIsWFH · 05/12/2023 14:50

Hmmm. I have an irrational hatred of macrame following trauma in school craft lessons c1991. Appliqué sounds a bit beyond my capabilities. Maybe I have daft dreams of a marvellous tapestry that I should just leave in 1599!

I think you'd need some kind of loom for a wall-sized tapestry.

KirstenBlest · 05/12/2023 15:30

@MissPettigrewIsWFH , it doesn't have to be. I was thinking of something like where you hand sew round the pieces. The background could be big and the pieces big, but it could be quite simple and relatively quick.

Something a bit like this one maybe if you look closely at the stitching, but you could do a simpler design

Would you ever think about buying an old carpet (like a Turkish Kilim) which needs repairing and then try to repair it? A close friend of DM’s used to have a business buying and selling carpets and mending them (mostly for resale I think). The carpets are often hung on walls or put on floors.

Tapestry wall hangings covering a wall in an old house would be woven.

If you don't want to design something, and I don't blame you, have a look at Ehrman. However for something big, it's not cheap, despite you having to make it yourself.

I am pondering the same thing.
I have found a few examples where people have framed small turkish rugs or you could use a suzani, pics to follow

@trickyexthose rugs are basically kilims like my mum’s friend used to buy and sell and mend. Some are more decorative than others. In terms of them being like tapestry designs, you might get something in that line I think I’ve seen hunting dogs and peacocks on these but if it’s antique the dealer might try to sell it for a good price if so because the design is more unusual. My DM has 3 of these rugs one is a dark purplish colour, the other is cream with criss cross black and white sort of squares and colours (think turquoise and wine) and the other is a peacock blue colour with a light cream edge and then a colour, similar to your picture of the Nemrut one.

Such woven wall hangings were common in Eastern Europe. Been a while since I've been there but I distinctly remember visiting parents' old friends and relatives and all of them seemed to have what seemed like rugs on their walls as opposed to the floor.

Seemed really cosy and rather lovely.

Look at these kits. There's a way of joining them together, so could you use these kits, and join them up into a hanging?

trickyex · 30/12/2023 20:53

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain would love to see pics of your Mother's kelims if you have any? They do sound lovely.
Great thread OP. hope more people add to it

CherrySocks · 30/12/2023 20:57

Jumping on thread to ask how do you hang them on the wall? Is there a way to hang them from a picture rail? Can anyone recommend stockists of the hangers please?

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/12/2023 21:03

I'm thinking of doing an applique one. I like the one linked above

AnnaMagnani · 30/12/2023 21:05

You sew a horizontal pocket on the back to put a rod in. Rod can then be put into hooks on the wall.
