A beginner total newbie to Knit/Sew/crochet!

Through an unrelated set of events, me - the FT working mum of 2 smalls - has come into the possession of -

  1. A gift voucher to a Beginners in person crochet class of 2 hours duration
  2. A second-hand Frisster & Rossman electric sewing machine
  3. A pair of knitting needles and a bag of yarn

I have never done or been taught any of these 3 - and 1) I would like to learn at least 1 of these 3; 2) I have no inclination to spend lots of money on things that I may never use. But I would love to be able to get into them.

Any advice on what first steps should be? I tend to have some downtime in front of Netflix every evening, so I could potentially make time.... If anyone has super simple first step projects to watch YouTube tutorials on - for any of these things - will be grateful. Or any other tips?

I like all three of these and sewing js my favourite, but I am also working full time and two children so free time is not huge. Crochet fits well into that for me, as it's something I can put down and pick up easily and do while watching tv with children. For me knitting takes more focused attention, and the sewing machine is great but you need a dedicated space to sew or there's a lot of unpacking and packing away again.

The crochet course should give you the best start into the hobby but there are lots of you tube videos to follow. Beware though of the uk vs US crochet stitches. Both are differently named so stick with one or the other if you can! Granny squares are good to start on, and you don't need to learn the 'magic ring' immediately. Look for a tutorial which shows you how to do a few chains and then chain into a circle/middle section.

I'm rambling now but try them all if you can and you'll soon know what you like best/what fits your life style. Enjoy!

Crochet is good in front of the telly once you get the hang of it. It is quite easy and quick to make hats for the kids.
I can recommend Bella Coco on youtube as an intro to the basics. Good luck!

I sew and crochet. Sewing is much more time consuming both to do and to learn from scratch. Also fabric is expensive.
Crochet is very relaxing once you get the knack. I started with blankets. A big repetitive project that you can do with half a mind on something else.
