I've just moved house and found a massive kiln in the garage. What do I do with this?

What do you mean what do you do with it. Do you mean you don’t know what a kiln is for?

TeenDivided · 23/10/2023 10:53

Ask via solicitors/estate agents for the previous owners to pay for removal.

or take up ceramics.

BlackForestCake · 23/10/2023 10:55

Can you make pizza in it?

Dontknowwhatisgoingon · 23/10/2023 10:57

I know it's for pottery, but I have no interest in this. We had agreed with the previous owners they could leave the 'small kiln' as they lived overseas and weren't able to clear the house, but we were not aware it would be this huge. Based on this I don't think we can get them to remove it.

@BlackForestCake that would be amazing but it's a little bit big for pizzas I think!

Buy some clay.

Doggymummar · 23/10/2023 11:00

Sell it, they are expensive

TeenDivided · 23/10/2023 11:01

Following your update sell or freecycle it.
Perhaps your local secondary school would be interested?

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 23/10/2023 11:02

how easy is it to remove? Advertise on Facebook marketplace free to anyone who can remove / collect? If expensive to buy you could even ask for money as well as asking people to remove?

junbean · 23/10/2023 11:02

Have you seen I Came By on Netflix? I instantly shuddered when I read this. If you haven't seen, don't!

80sMum · 23/10/2023 11:02

A "small kiln" is never going to be small in absolute terms, only relative to a large kiln. If you can fit it easily in the garage, it's small.

Can you not sell it? That's what I would do, I think.

JayeAshe · 23/10/2023 11:05

A local art college//community arts centre might appreciate the opportunity to acquire a kiln ...

AnSolas · 23/10/2023 11:13

Rent the garage and weekly a firing out to the local hobby groups?

If it is mobile and not build in you can sell it.
Check the make and model to see how much it would go for new. Some older quality brands hold their value
I would post on the specialist craft website chat boards rather than a FB or other generic sites.

And ask MN to move this to the arts and crafts section you may get a buyer or atleast an idea of its resale value if any

BrimfulOfMash · 23/10/2023 11:14

Search ‘pottery kiln for sale’ on Facebook and you will see loads for sale £85 - £900.
Put it on Marketplace, buyer collects.

Dontknowwhatisgoingon · 23/10/2023 11:18

Thank you all. I think I'll try and sell it. I've seen a similar one for 3k (!) in good condition so I thought about putting it on ebay for half of that and leaving it a few weeks to see if anything happens!
How do I move to arts and crafts?

OP posts:
Redshoeblueshoe · 23/10/2023 11:20

Just report your thread, and ask for it to be moved

Mylobsterteapot · 23/10/2023 11:26

It’s fine, it’s just kiln’ time whilst you learn pottery…

I’ll get my coat.

ActDottie · 23/10/2023 11:29

Doggymummar · 23/10/2023 11:00

this

AnSolas · 23/10/2023 11:40

Report your thread to MN and ask to be moved.

If you think its worth 3k I would look at putting it up on a ceramic or glass fusing website rather than ebay or even phone the stores which stock your brand as see if they sell on commission.
You dont know enough about its history to prevent being scammed by someone claiming it died as soon as they got it home so make sure you are selling it as is for parts etc

Mrsgreen100 · 23/10/2023 11:49

Sell it they cost a bomb , contact your local ceramic evening class provider and ask if they have any one that needs one
explain you will let it go cheaply
also look at local potters and email them
it may have a fault but people in the know can repair replac elements etc

FunCatSunPat · 23/10/2023 11:51

I'll have it!

Sell it sold as seen and the reason/ history attached ie you know bugger all. That way you have no liability as to condition.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/10/2023 11:59

Great. Marketplace. Extra cash for Christmas.

muchalover · 15/11/2023 20:04

I have a shed full of ceramic molds. Been there 13 years.
