Beginners crochet kit?

Any suggestions of lovely craft places selling nice yarn etc that could put me together (or I could myself) a learning to craft kit? I really want to get off my phone and start crafting for my mental health - but really don't want to get a kit of amazon, would rather support a local/independent store

Attic24 kits. That’s was first project for me. Lots of squares.

Smartiepants79 · 27/09/2023 18:31

I recommend you tube videos for visual help with how to do it. I’ve learned the basics from a woman called Bella coco.

Potentialmadcatlady · 27/09/2023 18:31

Attic24 via wool warehouse would be a good start.. maybe get hooks from there too or hobbycraft.. different hooks feel different so don’t go too expensive until you find the ones that suit you best. I love the Yuletide pattern- it’s a lot less complicated than it looks

Watch Bella coco and spider fibre ( he’s funny and his which way fillet is an interesting one that just uses trebles stitches)

You just need a ball of double knit yarn and a 4mm hook. Buy from anywhere, if you like it you can invest in nice bits.

Emmaemmeline · 27/09/2023 18:48

I went to the wool shop in my local market
The owner was knitting behind the counter and was super helpful
I bought Stylecraft DK , a couple of hooks and watched YouTube videos from Bella Coco
I also did a 4 hour workshop ( in March ) in a local jewellery shop that does various arty workshops , how to make a granny square , was fun ( and I came home with a very small granny square ) now I’m making blankets !

Seconding or even thirdsing Attic 24 from wool warehouse. Also look on Lucy's attic 24 blog for beginner tutorials.

TheFairyCaravan · 27/09/2023 18:51

Just buy some stylecraft special DK and a 4mm hook then follow some Bella Coco videos on YouTube for a bit. Don’t put any pressure on yourself by buying actual kits just yet, you’ll be doing them soon enough.

Scampuss · 27/09/2023 18:54

My advice is, don't buy super cheap yarn or super cheap hooks, quality does make a difference.

Get yourself some nice little scissors, some wool needles for darning in ends and some stitch markers (clover make some nice ones, and something nice to keep them all in.

Start with pale colour yarn as it's easier to see your stitches.

FluffandBuzz · 27/09/2023 20:09

There are some nice ones on Etsy which would be (probably) supporting an independent trader.

There are a few kits where you can get yarn, instructions and even a hook to make little amigurumi (soft toys!)

I learned to crochet using Wee Woolly Wonderfuls. Someone gave me one of their kits for my birthday, and there are YouTube videos that go alongside it. I've done several of their kits now, as I really enjoyed it. I will caveat this with the fact that I am strongly left-handed, and I simply couldn't learn to crochet right-handed. I ended up having to mentally reverse the YouTube videos, so that I could do it left-handed.

CyberCritical · 27/09/2023 20:36

Echoing stylecraft and a 4mm hook, just to get you started so you can sit and practice and learn. Once you've figured it out you can get a kit or find a pattern online and buy the colours you want.

Word of warning, make sure you know if the stitches you are learning are the US or the U.K. names. They are different, not hugely but just enough to bugger up your pattern if you think you're using a U.K. pattern which calls for a Double Crochet stitch but your actually using a Us pattern where they call it a Single Crochet.

CrochetBug · 27/09/2023 20:40

I wouldn't get a kit until you've tried it and know you're going to like it. I agree with the PPs that a ball of stylecraft Special and corresponding hook would be best.

So DK and 4mm
Or aran and 5mm.

So many options! I went on WW and bought 4 balls (skeins?) of DK and a 4mm hook, and a sweet little cross stitch kit too. There are so so many pretty things 😀
