I'm just learning crochet and doing a granny square with colour change each round . Can I check how best to end a round? I'm doing a slip stitch to join into the top of first chain 3/ treble but then not sure quite how to finish. The you tube vids I've watched all then do ch 1 to sort of finish it? Is that right? It sort of affects the shape a bit ? But if you don't do that I'm guessing it would be loose and unravel ?

I slip stitch into the top of the 3 chain, cut the yarn and then pull it through the loop on my hook. It's perfectly secure and will be sewn in to further secure it.

I always start a new colour in the corner so it isn't too affected by the last stitch. I also try to alternate the new colour starting point - just because sewing in the loose ends adds to the fabric of the crochet so I try to spread them evenly throughout. Every fourth colour change is in the same corner.

No, you don't do a chain to finish it. Just cut the yarn and then pull the crochet hook so that the end comes through.

Thank you ! I will try that

And for the tip on colour changes - I hadn't thought of that

Sorry one more question I have done my first square and the the pattern says it should be 4 inches after 4 rounds but mine is 3.5inches. It's for a garment so should I go up
A hook size ?

Yes, go up a hook until you the right size. I just chain 2 as a beginning st, I find ch3 is too tall.

I always do an 'invisible join' as I find it a lot neater than a slip stitch.

boredsolicitor · 30/09/2023 01:30

Hi crochet bug. I will try and find a video for that as even just a slip stitch I still see the join . I'm a beginner so maybe it will get neater though!

There's a nice clear setb of instructions here @boredsolicitor , or Bella coco has a video if you prefer that.
A slip stitch finish does leave a visible bump. This doesn't, it just takes a little practise.

I have been crocheting for years but I'm not great at following patterns. My latest line is to start shaping an armhole and it says...
3ch, miss 1tr, 1tr into next tr, patt to last 4 sts, turn

I understand the first bit but I have no idea what patt to last 4 stitches means?

Grateful for thoughts please. Thank you

CrochetBug · 01/10/2023 09:58

I think it means you follow the pattern (I'd assume whatever the garment pattern is) until you have 4 stitches left.
