Crocheters, is this a completely bonkers idea?

I've been crocheting ds a blanket for his 1st birthday - nothing flash, just straight rows.

However, he's a real 'ripper and puller' iykwim, everything that goes in his mouth then gets pulled as hard as he can to see if it'll come apart and for obvious reasons I'm not keen for him to do that to my beeyootiful blanket!

So I wondered, d'you think I could I tack it onto a 'backing', like a pretty quilting fabric? Or rather, a pretty quilting fabric backed with a plain fabric that would show through the tacked-on crochet.

Um, if you can make any sense out of what I just said, is that a completely bonkers idea? Should I just wait and give it to him when he's older?

We have a beautiful crochet blanket made by dp's mother that is sewn onto a quilted backing. Can't think exactly how she did it without going to look, but I know it's gorgeous. We used it a lot as a lying-on mat when dd was tiny.

Of course, you could machine it on for extra durability.

oh, that sounds just like what I'd like to do!

(ignoring the fact that I know ZILCH about quilting, or sewing, for that matter ).

is it very 'secure' (ie, resistant to little fingers?

don't have access to a machine, rhw.

also, I was thinking, next year we'll be living in australia so might like to be able to separate the two when he's a bit older.

You could use two layers, sew wadding inbetween and sew the crochet on to that.

You could hand stitch it, you'd have to be more patient than I for that though.

yes that's what I thought.

if I have to do it that way he might get it before his 21st birthday...
