Has it been woven rather than embroided, it reminds me of a medieval tapestry.

Long and short stitch ????[doubtful emoticon]
Or could it be crewel work...actually it does sound like crewel work

I have done crewel with other than wool, although it works best with wool.

You do a stitch, and then come up through the actual stitch, and repeat. It is very good for curves and swirls...bit like stem stitch I suppose. Then it could be over sewn on top

Also think there may be long and short stitch which can be similar to crewel work. It is used for filling in big areas.

How do you know it's not woven. I teach textiles to A level and am not sure WHAT stitch is used on that!!
