i can knit and purl, cast on and off with no problems.....

i want to knit a plain jumper for my little boy, but i can't for the life of me figure out how to shape the armholes, or how to get a nice finish to the neck. I just can't get my head round any of the patterns i've found.

can anyone explain to me in simple terms how to do this? or am i going to have to find myself a granny to physically show me?

my own grandmother was the greatest knitter i ever met (12 children and 27 grandchildren so she had plenty of practice!) but unfortunately she is no longer with us and now i'm kicking myself for not getting her to show me how to knit!

ok so you have problems with increasing and decreasing?

it is very very easy

here are some helpful videos

knitting help

you dont need a granny, you need this website

the videos are really helpful and its how i learned to knit just over a year ago, i couldnt even remember how to cast on then so you should be fine! i think you should really find a jumper pattern to use, you dont have to shape armholes for kids jumpers you can just make the front and back rectangle shaped, but i found the neck a bit scary so i was glad to have something to tell me exactly what to do! dont worry, other than a couple of decreases and picking up stitches its really easy.

another great website! there are free patterns for pretty much everything on here. i would recommend reading the whole pattern before you start so you are happy you can do it all. if you dont like the look of it pick another one. just ignore patterns if you dont want to do them and use the basic jumper instructions.

lots of people would tell you to start with a scarf but i have never managed to finish a scarf as i get bored too quickly. i made 2 jumpers with ninja turtles on the front for my 1st knitting projects and although i would do a few things different now as they are not completely perfect my boys still love them and wear them and i know that wouldnt be the case with a scarf so it has been much more satisfying to start off with a more ambitious project

i'm well practised at scarves and i usually crochet, but thought i'd have a go at knitting him a jumper. he has an adorable black and red striped one that someone knitted for him and i'm sick of not being able to find plain jumpers without hoods (he hates hoods) so figured i should just get knitting!

thankyou for the links!
