Organic wool

Am looking for advice on where I can buy some organic wool on the internet (preferably a British website). Didn't know whether to post in this category or in products.

Haven't knitted since I was about 9 but have got a basic guide to knitting and want to start myself off by making something simple - maybe a blanket for my unborn DC3! Wanted to get hold of some nice wool that would be suitable for that kind of job. Have had a quick browse on the net but no luck.

4+1, I have just posted a message for you on Ravelry asking for advice - will get back to you when I get a reply! (and if you haven't registered for Ravelry, do so now!)

Thanks miaou. What is ravelry? Is it a section of mumsnet that I have not yet discovered?

Posh yarn do an organic merino.

florenceuk · 21/02/2008 21:50

There is quite a lot of organic cotton around:
e.g. sublime and rowan You should be able to get Rowan from any John Lewis.
For organic wool, IKnit sell Cornish stuff: garthenor and here cornish wool although I'm not sure how soft it is. cotton is nice for blankets!

Fubsy · 21/02/2008 21:59

I really like the colours of the Rowan yarn, they would be great for child or baby knits.

Miaou · 21/02/2008 22:02

no, this is ravelry

you need to sign up and get invited on, but it's fab! You can share photos of your work, look up thousands of different patterns, and see how other people have knitted up a particular pattern. It's incredibly absorbing

Anyhoo, I now have some links for you:

x-posts (changing ds2's nappy!)

FourPlusOne · 21/02/2008 22:35

Thanks all, will check out your suggestions in the morning, and will try and get myself on the ravelry guest list...don't think they will want to see photos of my work though, unless they fancy a good laugh! Poor DC3 is probably going to have a wonky blanket but at least the wool/cotton will be nice. Intended to knit something for DC2 when I was pregnant but never got around to it so am determined this time.

I love this stuff

blue sky alpacas

esp the cotton

Fillyjonk · 22/02/2008 07:03

sorry had to go sort baby

it is insanely soft, yet produces good stitch definition (if you are thinking of cabling or anything)

the coloured stuff isn't technically organic, iirc, and is not certified-this is because the dyes used stop it from being organic.

florenceuk · 22/02/2008 13:49

filly does it pill? Am tossing up between All Seasons cotton and this for a jumper for DS and somebody said it pilled.

FourPlusOne · 22/02/2008 20:28

I think you are overestimating my capabilities fillyjonk - I think that I will be using the most basic of stitches!! There are so many nice looking ones, I still can't decide which one to go for. will definitely order something this weekend and aim to begin next week! Have my 20 week scan in a few days and want to begin after that if all looks OK with baby (as a kind of celebration). Hopefully 20 weeks will be enough time for me to knit something reasonable.

ok but this would be a GOOD yarn for basic stitches.

It looks like it is meant to be...handmade...

it would take garter stich very beautifully and would make an incredibly soft blanket

florence-it hasn't pilled on me thus far but...i've used it for mainly hats though thus far...its soft though and actually, I've been sticking it on a wool wash, but then tuble drying . It doesn't pill when I do that...it does feel like cotton wool, I suppose.

I love asc for kids jumpers though, it doesn't pill and the stitch definition is good, also you really can bung it in the wash.

florenceuk · 23/02/2008 12:37

I think the problem with ASC is it doesn't have all the lovely colours of Blue Sky - DS wants a lime green and yellow jumper and while there is a lime green in ASC it is fairly light.

A garter stitch blanket would be fairly straightforward - this one looks easy and nice: sublime and I would have thought fairly easy to do with out a pattern - just stripes. Mind you blankets can be dull - hats are very easy and quick for a first project.
