Where do you buy your crochet wool?

I'm new to crochet, loving it!!!
Went to hobbycraft but was disappointed with the range tbh. I like a chunky smooth yarn.
Any recommendations for online places to buy, or indeed specific yarns?
With some of them I'm struggling to get them to slide over the hook when doing trebles etc and don't really want to get into the habit of lifting the stitches over.
Many thanks

Wool warehouse

PaniniHead · 29/05/2023 09:20

Wool warehouse for me too

SoupDragon · 29/05/2023 09:22

Yes, Wool Warehouse here too.

Plus Hobbii

Woolwarehouse for Stylecraft yarn. I mostly work in their Double Knitting yarn but have used the Aran too.

Love Crafts stocks Paintbox Aran which is lovely too but I have only knitted in this so can't testify to how it flows for crochet.

If you're just learning, you can't go wrong with Stylecraft Special DK.

SabbatWheel · 29/05/2023 09:24

Wool Warehouse and Lovecrafts online, both excellent range and prices (and if you sign up for emails from Lovecrafts they do deals every day).

Singleandproud · 29/05/2023 09:25

Woolwarehouse, and there is pretty much always a discount code.

Sounds silly but rub your crochet hook in your hair it'll help the yarn slip over and also double check your tension.

I use Purple Sheep Yarns to buy Drops yarn. They're really quick to ship and I've never had an issue with an order from them.

Another one for Wool Warehouse. They also send the yarn in

Lovely organza bags that are great for putting finished products in if they’re going to be gifts.

I was taught to crochet using a 6.5mm hook & Hayfield Bonus Chunky. Since then I've used anything & everything, including some weird experimental yarns, thick & thin, multi-coloured, glittery & sequinned. Ebay is good for standard, weird & discontinued stuff. Wool Warehouse & Lovecrafts are quick & good.

Black Sheep Wools (online or an actual shop if you’re in the North West).

What kinds of things are you crocheting?

I’m not a big fan of acrylic personally, I prefer wool, cotton or bamboo.

Amazon

Denise82 · 31/05/2023 15:21

Posted too soon,
Amazon I've found some nice chunky soft wool I made two small throws for my kids, they love them they are so soft and thick.

RuffledKestrel · 31/05/2023 16:04

Wool warehouse and hobbi are my go places these days.

LilacRos · 01/06/2023 14:08

I've used Lovecraft, they took over Deramores and I love Deramore's double knit.
Also had good value from That Little Wool shop(online or in Lincoln).

For a beginner I'd recommend DK acrylic. I find cotton very difficult to work with and pure wool is itchy.

I find cotton comes in fabulous colours but doesn't 'give' as you work with it, which I find more tiring on the hands. I've got a Noema project on the go (one of soooo many) which I love looking at but hate making.

Isheabastard · 01/06/2023 14:29

I’ve been buying wool (acrylic) from B & M. There not a lot of choice, but they’ve been doing a very chunky yarn and it’s pretty cheap.

MyOtherProfile · 01/07/2023 08:44

Late to the party but another vote for Stylecraft Special DK as it is easy to work with, washes well and comes in a huge range of colours.

I often buy from Wool warehouse but I do really try to buy from our local yarn store (LYS) whenever I can see it's good to support a local business.

Welcome to crochet. It's quite addictive!
