Which Gutermann thread do I buy?

I just want 250m of black and white, the bog standard one for machines. But I’m looking on Amazon, there are so many varieties, I hadn’t realised.

Gutermann sew all is a polyester thread that is strong and us ful for all purposes. But if you're using it to sew cotton then it would be best to buy a cotton thread.

Ah ‘sew all’ is the generic one then?

I also have (separate to the things I want to sew with generic thread) a cotton shirt that has puckered slightly along the seams. Should I resew this with cotton thread, would the seam stay unpuckered then?

Sew all is the bogstandard one and it’s strong and sews well in a sewing machine. The downside is if you ever want to dye something that’s a natural fibre, the fabric will take the dye but the thread won’t change colour. Plus it’s a plastic so adds to plastic in the environment ultimately which I worry about a bit. So I have been switching to cotton - but it’s not as strong and slightly less smooth in the machine.

for the shirt, if seams have puckered, I don’t think the type of thread will affect the outcome. It’s hard to say without seeing it but what might work is washing it then stretching out the seams while damp. Otherwise, you might have to unpick and resew, and either type of thread would be fine for this.

gutermann also do extra strong/thick, and silk which is lovely to hand sew with 😍 I have a big collection.

@SockGoddess Thanks. I have tried to pull the seams taut when damp, but it is a panelled skirt, with about ten seams, I got so fed up of doing this I just thought I should resew it.

If I pull the fabric tight when sewing would that help?

Hmm I don't know - it sounds like a big job to unpick and resew all the seams, but if you don't unpick I don't think you can fix the tautness (if stretching doesn't work). What I would prob do is set the stitch to a very slight zigzag, so it has some give. But I'm wary of saying what you should do with this as I don't want it to be wrong and make things worse!
