Sleeping bags - what kind of wadding / padding?

Hello! I'm going to have a bash at making a sleeping bag for my 3 month old - I've bought one so have a pattern to copy but what do you think about the wadding? I suppose what I'm asking is how do I know what tog it will be when finished (and therefore that I won't cook her)?

I made crib bedding for my DSes, but used really lightweight wadding so that I could put cotton or fleece blankets on, but going on the side of caution so that baby wouldn't end up too hot. Had you thought of sandwiching two layers of cotton/jersey and one of fleece together so that you are able to work out the actual rating, for your own peace of mind? are you planning to use it at home for night time or something else? What I mean is, if you're in a centrally heated house, two layers of sheeting and one of fleece is probably enough?

I make coverlets for babies which consist of a layer of cotton and 1 of fleece sewn together. They are the same as the ones you can buy from Mothercare etc and have a tog rating of @2.5

I'm sure that 2oz wadding wouldn't have a tog rating any higher than fleece so a layer of that between 2 layers of cotton should be OK for a sleeping bag

Great, thanks. I was thinking of using flanellette (sp?) on the inside and cotton on the outside, patchwork fabric probably.

I looked on Butterick, Simplicity etc websites but none of them seem to have a pattern for sleeping bags, doesn't that seem strange!

Thanks again

One more possibly stupid question - dizzy, do you put the fleece on the inside? Or does it not make any difference?

Mine are just two layers but it shouldn't matter - I don't think - where you put the fleece

be mega clever and make it reversible...
if you have one side seam on fold or sewn, whilst there are press studs on the shoulders and a zip along the bottom to the armhole on the other side, then no reason why it shouldn't be reversible IYSWIM!
