I have a fair few hobbies, all sort related, but I'd love to get into something more creative. Trouble is I don't think I'm very good at it.

My mum knits and sews, my sis in law sews things like unity scarves, make up brush rolls, scrunchies etc and sells them, my Dd17 can crochet loads of things- jumpers, top, bags etc and can now knit too.

I have tried asking them for help with things before but because they can all do it so well, it's hard for them to explain stuff in really very basic terms for me to understand lol.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for crafty things I could try ( I have tried cross stitch, card making before wich aren't for me) I would really love to get into sewing though, but don't have a sewing machine.

The easiest and most accessible is crochet in my opinion.. you just need a ball of yarn, a hook and away you go.. best online resources are Bella coco crochet and Attic 24.. there’s loads of free help and inspiration there. I own a yarn shop and I regularly tell my customers that everyone can craft.. it’s a technique like driving a car.. it just takes practice 😊

How about slow-stitching? Very easy, minimal outlay on kit, and easy to create something lovely from very little.
Great for your wellbeing too 🙂

Stop worrying about being crap at it? I have a hobby I have done for years. I am absolutely dreadful at it and never get better. In fact, I think I am actually getting worse! But I go just because I like it!

Also if your relatives can’t explain how to do it, that might just be because they aren’t very good at explaining. See if you can find a teacher or class led by someone who is good at teaching beginners. And then really focus on dedicating time and regular practice. ( one of the reasons I never get better at my hobby is because I don’t have time to practice between lessons. Even I could probably progress a little if I did that : )

I agree, it doesnt matter if you are good or not, people do hobbies becuase they enjoy it, or it clams them, or has some other positive affect on their lives.
And not evryone is a good teacher, but luckily there is Youtube!
BellaCoco is really good for begining crochet, but it can take a while to get the hang of it, so don't give up!

A sewing machine is a bit of an investment, but they are fairly cheap second hand. Also, all the fabric shops near me offer classes, have a look near you, then you can have a go under competent supervision.

Witchcraft?! 😁

StrongTea · 07/04/2023 08:10

I have just started a basic embroidery kit, design was printed on the fabric. Quite enjoying that. Only a couple of different stitches to do.

If you have a Library of Things near you perhaps borrow a sewing machine
youtube is great for knitting videos too teach yourself

We don't unfortunately, I have actually looked at you tube videos and I did surprise myself by understanding, but when my mum and daughter are sat here trying to explain it to me, I just don't get it🫣 maybe I need to try without telling them🤣

Thanks for all the replies, I've not heard of slow stitching before, will have a read up of that. And yes you're all probably right, I need to stop worrying about whether I'm not good at it or not and just try.

A trip to Hobbycraft or similar and just wander round til something grabs your attention?

Mumtothreeandadog · 13/04/2023 19:35

I am all fingers and thumbs when it comes to craft and really struggle. However I have ɓeen doing an online course with Sooz in the shed and has been great. You watch a video, take a photo of how you are getting on via What's app. It has taken me ages to get the hang of it and I'm slower than most in the virtual group but I'm happy with my results so far

what about the paper based crafts - Decoupage, paper cutting, quilling? Instagram may have inspiration for you too.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 02/06/2023 20:05

Mosaic making isn’t hard. I did a summer school for a week one summer and really got into it and enjoyed it, have done a few kits since and also an evening class.

Totally agree. Hobbies are for fun not for being productive or making money (you do enough of that with work). There are lots of you tube tutorials for just about everything. What about baking?

sleepismyhobby · 02/06/2023 20:36

I'm thinking about making earrings I need to decided if I want to try fimo or beads
