Any quilters around? Or mathematicians? Hexagon question

I'm making a quilt-as-you-go with large hexagons, but I'm regretting the size of the hexagons. I want to use smaller hexagons. I don't want to undo the work I've done. I can't work out how to combine different sizes of hexagons. Any suggestions?

The easiest will be to halve the size of the hexagons, so 2 small ones on each edge of one large one. You will need some triangles to fill the gaps though until you've fully transitioned to small ones.

Pretty sure there's no way to tessellate two different sizes of hexagons. I'm not sure what "quilts as you go" means but I think you'd need to do a rectangle of the big ones in the middle and then move to an outer border of smaller ones.

How far along are you, are most of the big ones together already? What redesign plan do you have? Filling in spaces with triangles might work, to get down to shorter hexagon sizes. I imagine big ones in centre(s) & little ones around the outsides of each big-size cluster.

Not sure this is redesign or technical question.

Quilt-as-you-go means that each hexagons is sandwiched and quilted as I make it, and then all the hexagons are sewn together to make the whole quilt. So there is no quilt top. I just have a pile of large quilted hexagons at the moment.

It's both a redesign and a technical question, really!

Photos show the inspiration for the quilt.

I would want to continue in the same style, but am happy to have filler triangles of just the middle materials. Design-wise, smaller hexagons around a central block of larger hexagons is acceptable (though I haven't figured out how to do the transition). Aesthetically, I think mixing the sizes would be prettier. But, again, I can't work out how to do it.

Oh! I think I just worked it out!

3 half-sized hexes + 3 diamonds will make one full-sized hex. Then I can easily combine them with my already made hexes.

Have I overlooked anything?

I'd have come to the same conclusion I think. But if you're adding in diamonds then aren't you going to be altering the design as well because you won't have the clear star shapes?

WashAsDelicates · 02/04/2023 13:23

The middles are a variety of darkish solids and patterns. The outer triangles are all one pale colour that is not used in any of the middles. I have quite a lot of one of the solid colours, so I would try to make all the diamonds in that colour. The design will change, but the stars should still be the main feature. I think.
