learning to knit cables

I have recently picked up knitting again and am beginner level. Have just really enjoyed making fingerless gloves (not very challenging!) using circular needles and liked this much more than two needles.
I really fancy learning to knit cables and fingerless gloves seem a good size of project. I can’t find a tutorial/ pattern with beginner explanations. Any ideas?

Are you on ravelry? You can filter the patterns on there according to project, weight of wool and features so you can select eg knitting, accessories, cables and find patterns that way.
Do you have a cable needle? You need somehting to be able to hold the stitches, you can use a cable needle or a double pointed needle.

Loads of videos on YouTube showing you how to knit cables - just incorporate some into your existing pattern for fingerless gloves?

There's a video here explaining how you knit cables
they are very very easy really, you just use the cable needle to swap the position of your stitches over to get the twist

Cables realky are very simple, it's really just a matter of slipping some of the stitches onto another needle, resting it back or front (depending on patten/row) knitting the next stitches then knitting the ones on the other needle. You can do it using another knitting needle/a pencil etc but it's better for the tension and just easier to use a cable needle or small double ended needle.

id do something bigger than a fingerless glove to really get the feeling for it. Does he want a scarf?

I'm not sure what you googled? There are tons of tutorials online.

well done on the fingerless gloves!!

Thanks everyone. I’ll have a practice then just incorporate into my pattern. Which isn’t really a pattern - just a tube with a thumb hole!

I am a poor knitter but cabling is really easy I made a cushion with chunky wool it was a cheap kit from Aldi.

If you’re adding them to an existing pattern you need to be aware that cables pull the width in so you will need a few more stitches to get the same size. You could do a test piece (swatch) and measure how much difference it makes.
