Knitting help - don’t understand instruction

I’m a prolific if not very good knitter. I’ve knitted all sorts of garments and home wares. Done quite a bit of fair isle but I’m stuck with this pattern.
Anyone tell me what to do next? I’m at the 1st Row Knit 80 on this pattern which hopefully will appear on this post.

Just follow the pattern as described, it's a technique called short rows which adds extra fabric in certain sections (such as neckline or bust darts etc).

FluffyYucca · 21/01/2023 15:02

Don’t you just do exactly what it says in the brackets, or am I missing something really obvious?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/01/2023 15:03

How many stitches have you got at the moment? I think you're only going to knit a portion to and fro now so it just telling you how to do the last stitch as you turn it to give you a nicer edge?

BiasedBinding · 21/01/2023 15:05

It’s telling you to wrap and turn, the instructions in the brackets explain it but if it’s not clearly explained for you then you could look for “wrap and turn tutorials” on YouTube and there are lots of videos

Having said that, I've currently not touched mine for a week because I need to cast on along the edge of a v-neck at right angles to the current knitting and I'm a bit scared of doing it wrong!

So maybe go with somebody better than me.

I have made that jumper - tried to add a photo but it says the file is too big. Google 'wrap and turn' for a clearer description of how to do short rows. You can get videos but I prefer written instructions myself.

There it is.

Yep, it is literally follow the instructions as written, but if you've never seen wrap and turn before it will look as if it makes no sense!

There are a few different ways to do a wrap and turn but for your first go you should follow the instructions as written. Here's a good video from Very Pink.

Thank you everyone - very helpful. The video was useful.

I think where I’m confused is that I’ve to knit 80 stitches, turn, then 160 stitches. I’ll have a go and see where it gets me.

(Great work @CaptainMyCaptain ! )

That's right. You will go back further than where you started each time until all the stitches are incorporated.

Yep, remember your circular knitting is just one big spiral, so you can go back past the start of the row heading in the other direction. This blog post from Tin Can Knits has got a couple of useful pictures showing what you're doing (don't read the post in too much detail as they use a different short row method, the German Short Row). You're adding some extra rows to the back of the jumper so that the neck is higher at the back than the front.
