Crochet for a beginner

Hello!!

My DGM passed away recently and I have been given her sewing box and knitting bag. I can sew and knit.

In the knitting bag are also crochet needles and I want to learn. I have tried before but never go let in with it.

I'm looking for some recommended YouTube videos for beginners crochet. A lot of the ones I've watched either go too fast (and I can't pause in time) or I just can't seem to copy!

Thanks in advance!

Everyone I knew swears by Bella Coco.

@CrochetBug thank you! I'll give that a go. I'm desperate to make something pretty when I see all the Instagram videos and pictures!

I liked the crochet crowd Corner to corner blanket. I can only do the basics, but this is really simple.

I rmhave found blossom crochet really good on you tube.
I learnt about 2 years ago.
You could also search for teaching groups near you.

Definitely Bella Coco. I refreshed my skills by watching her YouTube channel. I also taught my DD-I-L to crochet and she uses Bella Coco too.
Good luck 😀

I was also going to say Bella Coco, her instructional videos are good.

💗 thanks all! I may look for a local group. There is a knit and natter near me which if it falls on my day off I might attend.

I used both Bella Coco and Blossom Crochet on youtube when I started out during the first lockdown. Both are excellent.

My advice, having taught various people to crochet, is to start with something worked from the middle out (like a granny square). If you do something you have to work in rows, then the first thing you have to do is work into a chain, which is an absolute ballache and will put you off the whole thing, whereas doing a granny square you avoid this.

Also, be aware that there are different UK and US terms for the various stitches. And when I say 'different', in some cases they're the same terms, but used to mean a different stitch. It's nothing to worry about but just keep it in mind when looking at patterns/videos/instructions. They should tell you which terms they're using, but basically that's why it's significant when they tell you that.

Agree with the granny square thing or something smallish like a snood.
I also like Bella coco.
My only issue is that, having learned from videos I currently can’t read a pattern at all!!

Thank you! After doing a little research I decided to try a granny squared blanket fist as most people said the same as you. I was going to knit some squares (as I'm more able to do that already) and crochet others. My DSD wants a purple blanket for the bottom of her bed so that's my first project.

Just make sure you’ve thought about how they’ll be joined!
I’m a beginner really and I tried to be clever by making 2 different patterns of squares. Luckily noticed quite quickly that the edges were not going to match up!
