Making curtains- confused with calculations

Going around in circles- I'd be grateful if someone could help.

I've been sold 510cm fabric to make a pair of curtains to cover window:
160cm wide
140cm drop

Fabric width is 142cm

Do I cut the fabric as I've drawn/calculated here; so each curtain will be made from fabric that’s 142+71=213cm wide?

TIA

Tbh I would probably make each curtain 142 wide, as that is nearly double the fabric width for the window so plenty of fullness. But how wide is your rail? That's more important because if it projects 20cm + past the window on each side the curtains with the extra width will be fine. But if your pole is only a couple of cm past the window, too much fullness will mean the curtains cannot be pushed back away from the window and too much fullness will be a pain if like me you like them pushed back away from the window edges during the say to let in as much light as you can.

Is there a pattern on the fabric which you need to match up?

CrotchetyQuaver · 20/12/2022 10:15

Is the curtain pole up? I would double check the measurements measuring from the pole before cutting the fabric. Check the pattern repeat and cut carefully so the pattern will look exactly the same on both curtains when they're finished and hung. It's possible you might only have enough fabric for single width rather than 1 1/2 widths taking the pattern repeat into account.

Ah the joins.

If you join 2 pieces together, you should have the narrower piece at the side of each curtain (not the centre) so the 2 curtains will be a mirror image of each other

I wouldn't cut and join the fabric with the weave going in different directions. I would cut all the fabric in the same direction. Even if there isn't a pattern it's going to look wrong.

Ignore me. I had a brief look and misunderstood the drawing.

Is there a pattern repeat?

As others have said you need to put the narrower curtain lengths on the outside of each curtain.

You need to measure from pole down to where you want the hem to sit and the width of the pole from where the finial joins the pole at each end.

If you are doing pencil pleat curtains then each curtain should be as wide as the pole, that will mean you have double gather and will look nice and full.

If you are doing eyelet/tabtop you can get away with 1.5 times.

After getting the correct height and width, you need to add allowance for hemming/attaching lining. Min 10cm to the length and width as you should double fold the hem and you need to do both sides, top and bottom.

Excellent step by step tutorials here OP.

Another good tutorial here (this is for pencil pleat curtains, so so depends what you want).
