Knitted Socks for a Beginner

Just that really! Have started to knit socks and been on a short course. Would now like to practise, practise and practise but am not happy with the pattern I got on the course. Could anyone recommend a good beginner's pattern? Would like to use DK yarn and have a shaped heel. Thanks all!

Have you had a look at Ravelry? Lots of patterns on that site and you can filter for patterns suitable for DK yarn.

I find Rachel Coopey’s/ Coop Knits patterns very clear (can be found on Ravelry), but they tend to be more intricate so may be not that suitable for beginners. Having said that my first successful pair of socks was made with one of her more complex patterns, after failing to follow some “beginner friendly” patterns. Clear instructions make all the difference!

A whole book might not be quite what you were looking for, but sharing this just in case. One of the patterns looks like a basic sock to me, just knitted in 3 different colours -

Have a look at Winwick Mum's website. She's brilliant, explains the process really well, and backs it up with photos and videos.
I found with sick knitting that some parts of it are completely non-intuitive but Winwick Mum explains it in a way that it all makes sense.

Search Vanilla Socks on Ravellry, there are lots of free, easy to follow patterns both toe up and cuff down.
I like The Apologetic Knitter’s pattern’ My Favourite Vanilla socks’ or Friday Night Socks is another.

This is a sock pattern that doesn't involve any turning of the heel or picking up stitches etc. It's for sport weight/5ply but would probably be ok in a light DK, as it's 2x2 rib so is snugger fitting. I've knitted a few pairs using this pattern, they fit very well and are quick to knit

I second Winwick Mum. She’s got a blog with the pattern and instructions, or you can buy the book. Plus there’s a very active Facebook group dedicated to the pattern.

I struggle with sock knitting. I think it's because you have to stick to a pattern and count stitches, whereas I prefer knitting 'off piste'.

Would love to make some lovely wool socks

I'd go for the Winwick mum site too. There are a lot more sock patterns in 4 ply, they still grow surprisingly quickly once you've got used to handling 4 needles. Enjoy!

I have successfully used this video and bought pattern too on etsy I think. I like that the video literally does it all so you can knit along.
