Lots of newbie yarn queries

(NCd just because I’ve put that epic cardi up on insta, in the vanishingly unlikely case that any of my few followers see this thread!)

I’m so bad at buying yarn!

Either too bright, too dull, too thick or too thin. Or too squeaky or too sweaty or itchy.

New to crochet and loving the process but not so much the yarns. Tried a cotton DK first which wasn’t soft and kept splitting. Made baby cardi in acrylic DK which was fine thickness-wise but too bright (I find it hard to visualise how strong the colours will be in the finished item?) and the acrylic was not my fave. Went to craft shop and the lady suggested this wool for chunky baby beanie (see pic), which is fine but only came in that colour and was nice to work with but a bit too crazy chunky and not the nicest colour (and still acrylic). Hobbii order arrived literally as I’d just finished the hat, one lovely colourful DK which I love and one mustard I was excited to make a headband with, but is very thin (doesn’t seem to have a thickness on the label). Shall I just stick to wool DK (or something one step thicker?) in neutrals - but not grey/sludge neutrals? Is acrylic ok or is it just for practise/cheapskates? So many acrylic pieces on sale on Etsy but I don’t know if that’s nice or not to wear.

Want to make baby hats for the hospital (they have a process for this so it’s certainly welcomed) as a way of practising (and also because I treasure my kids’ hats from them!) but obviously don’t want to be sending in ugly unusable hats.

Also how do I know how many balls of wool to use - baby hat was a whole ball! And balls are all different sizes 😵‍💫 Want to do a blanket of lots of different granny square designs all in one colour but how would I know how much wool it would take? E.G I have this lilac and white ball of wool (pic) - how do I know whether that will make a full hat or not?

Also what is sock wool because from what I’ve seen it’s 8-ply (DK is 4?) - so it’s thicker?? I’d have thought socks were made from fine wool.

Thanks!

That is a lot of questions!

A lot of it is trial and error tbh, over time you'll find your favourites. I tend to only use acrylic (Stylecraft Special DK is my go to) for blankets for gifting as it's easy to care for and can take a bartering.

Sock yarn is 4-ply weight. U.K. yarn weights from lightest to heaviest are roughly (though there can be some overlap): lace, 2-ply, 4-ply, DK, Aran, chunky. Other countries have different systems to describe but it usually easy to Google a conversion chart.

What you really need is a knitting or crochet book that starts off with a big section on yarn weights and fibres, these are often cheap in charity shops and old books are as good as new ones!

BeastOfBODMAS · 07/10/2022 21:19

I can’t answer all of your questions, but acrylic is used because it machine washes well, whereas wool tends to need hand washing. I make my babies clothes in acrylic mostly, or cotton for summer bits.

My jumpers are mostly a mixed fibre (eg 20-45% wool) as they machine wash on delicate but feel nicer and warmer than acrylic

Sock yarn is 4ply
DK is 8ply
One thicker than DK is Aran - 10ply
chunky is 12ply
Super-chunky usually 16ply

Stylecraft Special is a nice acrylic yarn to work with and comes in loads of colours

@Yarnosaur snap! Grin

JennieTheZebra · 07/10/2022 21:23

I only use merino/alpaca/cashmere. Expensive, but worth it. I spend many hundreds of hours on my knitting so I want it to be beautiful. Acrylic is only for those that can’t be trusted to look after wool properly-like my sister 😂

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 07/10/2022 21:35

OK thanks! So do you think I should go for a proper wool or a wool mix for these baby hats, rather than just acrylic? How often does a newborn hat need washing though…

I guess I will get more discerning as I make more stuff. I didn’t even own a crochet hook a month ago, it’s a very sudden obsession. Love the process of it!

I really like superwash merino for baby things, it's super soft and can be machine washed.

Blix · 08/10/2022 16:40

I wouldn't use wool. I know it's natural and all that but it's itchy, I couldn't tolerate it for a minute so I wouldn't put a baby in pure wool.
Acrylic DK is by far the easiest to work with for a beginner, move on to cottons and wools once you progress. I don't crochet for babies but often choose a baby range of yarn. l like Stylecraft bambino and bellissimo which have a good range of colours. I also like Cygnet Pure baby which is an anti pilling and has a hint of a shine.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 08/10/2022 17:21

Acrylics like Stylecraft are great for blankets, they really can take a hammering for frequent washing for babies or, on my case, smelly hounds! I love the Attic24 crichet kits on WoolWarehouse, they use Stylecraft & I wash the blankets every couple of weeks (see one of my dog’s legs in the pic below, the blanket underneath is a modified Attic24 kit, I used her pattern but swapped the colours around to make a more autumnal rainbow).

Attic24 always uses such great colour that works well together so it takes the thinking out of trying to figure out which colours work well together. She has a really good blog & does weekly crochet alongs too.

My Mum knits a lot of baby blankets, she swears by acrylic yarn, again for ease of washing. Baby knits are usually in 3ply or DK wool/acrylic mixes. We’re lucky that we have a John Lewis nearby, so we can feel the types of yarn to see what might work best, then order it online because wow, they’re expensive & I’ve found you can always get it cheaper elsewhere lol!

I wish we had the old wool shops like we used to, because they were always staffed with experienced knitting or crochet fans, who were a wealth of knowledge. And, you could touch the yarn to see how it would feel on the skin!

I’m sensitive to pure wool (and every pure wool item I’ve ever owned has been shrunken by my helpful husband, who would stick anything on a 40° quick wash until I taught him the way of reading the bloody washing labels!). I received some money from my Dad for my birthday last year, so I treated myself to the King Cole Riot variegated yarn below, to make a 3 panel wrap (using corned to corner crochet squares, to give a bit of a falling leaf effect). Also, by the length of the yarn colour repeat, it would’ve lost impact if I’d done a single large square, the smaller squares worked better.

As I’ve made up the pattern based on one I saw somewhere on YouTube, I had to kind of guess the amount I needed, buying 10, but then decided to make the pattern larger for bought another 4. As I’m at the making up stage now, I’ll probably be left with 3 full balls so may just have enough to add a hood, or pockets. YouTube crochet & knitting channels are great, but if they’re from the US they use yarn lengths not weight, so you have to convert them! Weird 😂.

This project has a bit of sadness though as Dad died unexpectedly in May, so I’ve been doing it in fits & starts whenever time is allowing.

Anyway, good luck with your wool adventures! I’ve always knitted since I was a child but crochet…it’s the crack of yarn projects! I only started 5 years ago & it’s just so fast compared with knitting! Husband asks when I don’t have a hook in my hands when I’m free, am I feeling ill 🤣

Obviously my phone is taking photos with our Australian viewers in mind! It’s isn’t blocked out again yet, hence it looks wobbly!

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 08/10/2022 19:57

@Blix @CentrifugalBumblePuppy thanks for your messages. I was thinking today how it would be silly to put a baby in wool really. The amount my 6 month old puked today…. 😄 and how shrinkable it is of course. I was just reluctant about acrylic because the ones I bought are quite sort of… squeaky! But it was only like £2 a ball so maybe not all acrylics are created equal 😄 I’ll definitely keep experimenting!

Meant to say @CentrifugalBumblePuppy sorry for your loss! You’ll think of your dad each time you look at that blanket :)

Superwash merino is nothing like what you're all thinking of when you think of wool!

BeastOfBODMAS · 09/10/2022 08:32

Definitely Acrylic for baby hats for hospital, it’s very much plonk and go, the surgeon isn’t passing on washing instructions as she sews you up Grin
I’d hate to think of a new mum washing baby’s first hat for the keepsake box and shrinking it beyond all recognition!
Superwash merino would be lovely for gifts for any babies you know where you can do a little label with care instructions

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 09/10/2022 15:19

Very true @BeastOfBODMAS although I’m not sure it’s actually the surgeon who does the hat plonking 😄

Its going to sound bonkers but one of the nicest yarns for crocheting with are the ombre balls at Poundland. They just feel nice as you work them and the ombre effect is very pretty when it works up. That said I quite like making baby items in a cotton yarn as it feels a bit more special than acrylic.

BeastOfBODMAS · 09/10/2022 18:57

@YesItsMeYesItsMe my baby emerged from behind the curtain in her hat so for all I know she knitted it in the womb

Stylecraft DKis a great all rounder and comes in loads of colours. If you look up Woolly Hugs on here there's a whole board devoted to knitting for charity and they have lots of projects where they've chosen colour palettes. I love looking at those for inspiration because they've selected beautiful colours that work really well together

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 09/10/2022 20:52

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime I meant to ask about Woolly Hugs! I’ll hunt for threads. I have looked up Stylecraft and can see Wool Warehouse do yarn packs of stylecraft for Attic24 and other crochet-slings which is all exactly the stuff I was interested in so this thread has been so helpful!

@YesItsMeYesItsMe There's a Woolly Hugs section on MN (under Body & Soul) but look through the Woolly Hugs website as well.

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 10/10/2022 21:40

Ohhhhh I thought woolly hugs were just an MN thing. Thanks!

(also previous post meant to say crochet-alongs not crochet-slings!)
