Sewing kit for a total novice

I got chucked out of needlework class at school for repeatedly failing to gather a skirt and stitch on a waistband properly, so can't quite believe my thoughts are now turning to sewing. But I'd really like to be able to make simple clothes for the kids, quilts etc - I love knitting and am pretty competent, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that I should be able to sew.
Where do I start? Can anyone recommend a good basic (cheap) sewing machine? And/or a good introductory book? What's a good thing to start with? And where do you buy your fabric from (online would be best...).
Sorry, so many questions...

To be honest, if you get a simple pattern it gives you all the instructions you need really. With that and access to the internet you should be fine I have a Brother sewing maching which is great, but I have to admit I am more of a knitter than sewer. I don't know what makes are cheapest- your best bet is to go somewhere like John Lewis and try some out or at least get advice.
