Bubble candles or jar candles!

Me and my mum would like to make some candles. We have lots of empty jars but are also debating using the moulds. I’m worried that with the moulds they could be more of a fire risk as there’s no container around the flame.

Has anyone done either of them? Which is easiest/best? We would be using soy wax if that makes a difference.

The bubble candles are more of an ornament than anything else. They don't burn well or for long. You should always put a pillar candle on a heat proof plate.
A jar candle is better, but the jar has to be borosilicate glass. You can't just use any old glass jar otherwise it could shatter.
The wick type and size is important too. Candleshack have a good wick guide.
If you use too big a wick the candle will produce soot. Yes, soy wax does produce soot and is no better environmentally than paraffin wax due to the way its grown and chemically extracted and processed.
If you just intend to make them for yourself you can just play around with fragrances. However, if you intend to gift or sell them, there are very strict laws that you have to adhere to including CLP regulations and General Product Safety Directive and candle safety labelling

@Sugarplumfairy65 Hi, I see from your posting above that you are an experienced candle maker.

can I ask, do you use a specific candle hot plate for melting your wax or just on the cooker?
I’ve seen some of these hot plates around and it all looks neat and compact so wondering if it’s worth the money.
many thanks 😊

A single induction hob is best for melting small amounts. I use big industrial melters that stay on all the time.
You'll need a big pan of water which you keep on the boil and a stainless steel jug. Dont try glass, it will crack and plastic will melt.
