I want to have a go at making some heart wreaths for my garden, as I am a complete novice< I don't want to spend a fortune. I did find one place on line but the delivery cost more than the actual twigs.

TBH I am not 100% sure its willow I need, I just know that willow bends.

Would it be a better idea to find a local willow weaving workshop to get you started so you can pick up some tips?

If by water could you find some? I’m Worcestershire and your very welcome to have some

Can you ask on local FB pages?

I've got a willow tree which badly needs cut back and I would happily give someone twigs for free.

Ilovemyshoppingtrolley · 09/08/2022 17:26

Thanks - hadn't thought about looking nearby .

Hazel twigs also bend really well, and need cutting back a lot.

Ilovemyshoppingtrolley · 09/08/2022 17:41

Thanks , I will look about for Hazel too x

I've got them from here before

www.musgrovewillows.co.uk/

and there are other similar places. make sure you also get the soaking bags. you need to soak them for 1 day per foot of willow before twisting to shape (e.g. if you buy 4 foot long willow, soak for 4 days before use).

Thanks, I just had a look at Musgrove willows but they want £21 for delivery.😫

Ask your local tree surgeon to save you some

when you see the size of the parcel, you'll understand why delivery is expensive.

if you really just want 10-20 stems, see if you can find a local place that does willow-weaving courses and ask if you can buy a few. The big sellers (Musgrove etc) are selling in bulk for people who want to make a whole fence worth or to make a career out of basket-making.

if You can find dogwood growing naturally you can use that instead. At this time of year you will have to strip off the leaves It is a reddish colour or wait until later in the year when it is bare. I’ll try to attach a photo of some that I used for a wreath. Heart wreaths need 6 stems

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 09/08/2022 22:31

I am sure there is a really good reason why this is a really bad idea, but couldn't you just buy the willow screening from B&M/Home bargains and cut the wire off?

Seen loads of that stuff on sale recently as they try to sell off all the garden stuff.

Friendofdennis · 09/08/2022 22:35

6 stems of dogwood for this

I've done a bit of willow weaving and I'd recommend looking to see if there's a local craft place doing a workshop. Lots of places do them in the run up to Christmas, making wreaths or hearts etc.
National trust type places might do them. Or look on here - Craft courses
