Hello
Please could someone advise me of a way to learn how to read a pattern? I've found YouTube helpful with starting and with specific projects but I can't read a pattern so making anything without the telly on is impossible

CTC corner to corner is an easy pattern to do without needing to watch YouTube & granny squares!

resding the patterns is just following step by step. The abbreviations are usually on the pattern if not you can Google them.

watch out for whether the pattern is U.K. or USA. Stupidly the same name for a stitch means different things. Google Double Crochet.

happybtontry to help if you have any specific questions.

I was the same as you, could follow a video but couldn't read a pattern.

I started with a woman's weekly blanket pattern from the knitting network.

I was able to follow it quite easily, and Google anything that I didn't follow. It was far easier than I expected.

What crochet do you fancy having a go at -
something flat, like a blanket or cushion? Or something in the round, like amigurumi?

Some of Attic24 patterns are good for basic and repetitive stitches which would build your confidence up. Just be sure to buy some stitch markers and a stitch counter - both saved a lot of pain for me. attic24.typepad.com

amigurumi isn’t as scary as it sounds and stitching in the round with markers is okay, honestly. I prefer this type of work overall now.

happy to help if you need it. Crochet keeps me sane!

Thank you
I want to make everything
But starting with a baby blanket, baby hat and a little baby toy

I've made a hat but the instructions were very easy and I used YouTube along with them

I've just managed to follow a pattern for the first time.
It's for the Virus shawl.
First I followed the YouTube tutorial but it only covered 9 rows and I struggled to continue without help. Then I found that I could follow the written pattern because I'd already done it for the first 9 rows.

Someone advised me on here to start with Sophie’s Universe and I think it was amazing. It includes nearly every stitch under the sun and there are YouTube tutorials if you get stuck. I had to crochet along to the first 4 parts or so but after that you don’t need to. It is a big project though. It took me about a year to finish (I work full time and have 2 young kids too).
