Seam allowance

I have a bird's skirt pattern which does not include seam allowance. I've never added seam allowance before and not confident I'd get the shape right. This might be a stupid suggestion, but I wondered if I can just cut out 1 size bigger?! Then I would have spare room for seams. Thanks!

I always use a 1cm seam allowance, but it depends on how confident you are with your sewing. You could always add 1.5cm and then trim down any bulky bits afterwards. Are you using an over locker afterwards?

Just thought, for the hem, depending on the shape, add a bit more as sometimes it can be a bit fiddly with a small hem allowance. (Unless it’s a circle skirt, then go a small as you can get away with!)

No I don't have an overlocker and I'm not really confident adding seam allowance. Would it not work to just make a bigger size rather than add allowance?
I might need to come back to this pattern when I'm a bit more confident!

I was taught a half inch allowance (taught a long time ago). The seam allowance isn’t the next size up unless the line is parallel the whole way around, and darts and markers may not be in the same place.

Once you have cut out your pieces could you pin the pattern to the pieces and mark the seam line either through tacking or chalk?
