Knitting needles - bamboo & Wood?

Have taken up knitting again and need to buy some needles. I used to borrow my mum's, she had plastic which I hated and metal needles. In our local shop its plastic or metal only, but online, I've seen bamboo and wooden ones. Have any of you used bamboo or wood and what are they like compared to metal?
I've also seen knit picks but I think its a bit expensive for me at the moment (I LOVE gadgety type things).

I'm not sure if forking out for a set of needles is a good idea as I'm not sure how much knitting I'll actually do, but it does seem cheaper in the long run to buy a set.

Any advice or recomendations please? Thanks

I have some lovely stainless steel DPNs from knitpicks and if I could afford to I would change all my needles over to them (currently have 'normal' metal needles) The yarn just glides over them beautifully.

bamboo tends to splinter after a bit.

but i actually find it depends on the type of yarn as to what needle i use. a fine, sticky wool i use with metal needles. a slippery yarn like silk, i use wooden.

i sound like a right prima donna...

Thanks for all your advice and comments, I'm not entirely sure what to get! I'm leaning towards the Boye needle master at the moment. I think I'll have to just go for it! Have added ravelry to my faves too and will have a proper look when I get mo.

have just tried out my Harmony set - one tip had a snag so Get Knitted are sending a replacement. Shame because I needed it today! But the cable is flexible, the join is smooth and the tips are very smooth (but not cold like metal). No bunching like the Denises. I think they?re OK, I just wish their product control was better so I could start the body of my cardy today! And the snag suggests that they may split over time - I'll see how I go.
