Decided I’m going to give upholstery a go.

I’ve dabbled a bit in jewellery making (beaded bracelets, necklaces and earrings) lampshades, soap making and candles too.
It’s all mainly ‘me time when the little ones are in bed.
I feel I’ve come alive again (sorry if that sounds naff, but hobbies had taken a back seat over last few years).

So now I’m thinking about upholstery, I would love to give this a go and have ideas for a couple of bits of furniture.

I am just wondering whether a short class course or teach myself/online learning.

What would you do?

Many thanks

You’re not in Northern Ireland by any chance? Smile I just saw a yarn shop advertise a wood carving and upholstery classes this week…

I've heard good things about Ministry of Upholstery in Manchester, because you can do a range of courses (in person and online). The owner was one of the creatives on Money for Nothing. Obviously for in-person courses you will need to be able to get to Manchester.

I was an upholsterer many years ago, pre kids. I went on a YTS scheme and was placed at a furniture restorers. It's a really great skill to have, and even though I haven't done it for years, I still know how to.
My friend went to a local furniture restorer and was his apprentice and has learnt how to upholster. She is in her late 50s so it's never too late to learn. If you have any local craft shops or centres they might be a good place to see if they offer courses, or have a look in your local paper (maybe online) and see if there are any about.

Thank you @KimMumsnet

@RenovationNightmare, @SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound
I’m in London, I’ve had a quick look to see what around, there’s a few centres that run classes along with other courses in central London.
I think I’m looking for something a bit more local to me, maybe a local upholsterer who does the odd class here and there in their workshop maybe. Here’s hoping!
@longtompot, there is a local craft shop, I think I will hop on the bus next week after school run and see.
For now I shall enjoy looking at clips online, and get some ideas!
I’d really love to learn this skill, I think it’s fascinating.
Thank you all for replying.

I see, you could try London Met, if you are in East London near Whitechapel, they do part time upholstery courses and I've seen the facilities (when I considered it in 2019), which looked good.
