Baby keepsake blanket from hand-knitted items?

Help me please, creative people! My mum has knitted a vast array of cardigans and the odd jumper for my two girls and we have all had a lot of pleasure and use out of them.
But my younger daughter is beginning to outgrow things and I am terribly sentimental. The smallest items have been kept back for the dollies to wear but I am wondering if it is possible to turn the cardigans into a throw or similar for mum to use (I have kept standard baby clothes back to get one made for us)? I am thinking it might be possible to unstitch things into the individual panels and then have them resewn into a blanket format somehow?

To my mum's dismay I never got on with proper knitting so I don't really know how the component parts look before they are sewn up into the garment to know if that's a non-starter. Plus I know mum hates the sewing up part so it might not be as pleasing to have them unpicked again 😂

One of the reasons you don't really see knitted things being made into blankets or patchwork is that each garment will have a different tension and probably pattern so it's hard to make a piece which holds together well.

Stitching patches together which aren't made of uniform fabric doesn't really work.

I'm sentimental too so feel your pain.

I posted too soon. I've put ours in those vacuum bags so they dont' take up a lot of space. Maybe another little baby might wear them in the future.

The only way I could see it working, personally, would be to 'mount' the garments, whole, onto a thick fleece blanket (eg) 'applique' style. This might not be the effect you had in mind. Can't think of other possibilities for the reasons already mentioned by PP.

Thank you both, I had a feeling it was going to be pretty much impossible. I can see that sort of applique idea possibly working out @SpongeBobJudgeyPants and that's just about within my own skill level- at least I could have a play about with a couple of less precious examples and tacking them onto something without doing any real harm 🤔 maybe thick ribbon to make a border round each piece might help make it look more organised. Actually if I fold them right they would be almost square shaped in most cases...you might be onto something there. I might even unpick one and see if I can do it with just the two front pieces to make it a bit more manageable, without spoiling the look of the the thing.

I've got one or two that she's requested I take the buttons off to reuse when the time comes so they might end up becoming unwilling volunteers in my experiment... I just love the idea of presenting them back to her to cuddle up to in one big pile of memories and sentiment although it would possibly be quite weighty!

I'll have a tinker about and if it doesn't look like a complete disaster maybe I'll be brave and post some pics. Thanks also @FortunesFave for explaining why just sewing the panels together would be a nightmare- I know mum always knits tight but I think she's used a different pattern for every piece pretty much so the chances of getting them to match up in that way are pretty slim!

Id would take photos of them for the memories and then donate them (assuming you arent planning any more). Taking them apart is likely to lead to a bit of a mess I think - Its not something Id try and Ive been knitting all my life.

A better option imho would be to get some yarn and knit/crochet some squares similar to the clothes....... similar/same motifs/colours...... sew them together and ta da a blanket.

I thought you meant unravel the yarn and then crochet a blanket out of it, stitching in the ends as you go. That would work (but the stitching in might get tedious).
