Basic embroidery question

I've just started embroidery after years of knitting and crochet. I got a very basic kit to start with but the instructions are useless so I'm mostly googling.
One thing I can't find the answer to - when it says '2 strands', do I then double this over by threading both strands through the needle and knotting both together at the bottom, or it is 2 strands altogether?
Thanks in advance!

Pull 2 strands from the 6 in a length of the embroidery thread. Thread them through the needle as one. I usually just start sewing leaving a few cm behind the work and darn in the end later.

Embroidery thread is usually made up of six strands. You cut the amount you want to use and separate two strands from the other four saving those for later. Thread the two strands through the needle, you then use this to do your embroidery. The two strands together are now just your thread.

Or you can use the clean start method as here www.needlenthread.com/2018/04/stitch-tip-a-clean-start-with-two-strands.html
