what do you mean?

I just poke a hole in each side and attach string (knotted) fill with seeds and add some fat after i have cooked sausages or something liek that, then hang

mustremembermyself · 03/01/2008 15:10

we do the same but add bits of bread/bacon rind/seeds etc.

tassisssss · 03/01/2008 15:14

hmm, so do you need to pour in hot fat or is there a way you could do this with cold stuff?

i'm wanting kids to make their own with as little adult intervention as possible.

thanks

just leave the fat out if its for the DCs to do. you would prob need to poke the holes in anyway i would have thought

oxocube · 03/01/2008 15:25

doesn't have to be hot, just melted lard with seeds, nuts, bacon rinds, etc. At least that's how Blur Peter did it 30 years ago

tassisssss · 03/01/2008 15:27

oxo, doesn't the lard go v hard?

could you decorate the pots somehow?

anyone any other ideas?

Instead of the yogurt pot, you could plaster your bird cake into the crevices on a fir cone or put some round the inside of an empty coconut shell. I am hoping to do the fir cone version... if I can find some fir cones!!

Coincidentally, have just hung out some of the birdfeeders we made at CenterParcs in September. Both are based on a mixture of seed and lard (lard is not melted, but must have been out of the fridge for ages, plus you mix it with the seeds with your hands so that softens it). #1 consists of this mixture put into a plastic cup, with a stick poked in the middle. It's been frozen since we made it, firstly so it would keep (September too early for fat for birds apparently), and secondly meant sure it came out of its mould nicely. It is now wodged in the fence looking like a big spotty lolly. #2 consists of a pinecone with a string tied round it, then lots of the fat/seed mix squodged into the gaps, and then built up into a ball.

Hopefully these will please our ungrateful local birds - they have left the monkeynut strings untouched, I think they may have been a bit too much like hard work.
