Hope you wise crafty people can help!

As part of a fun skill sharing type thing I’ve offered to ‘teach’ crochet to a few friends.

There will be two ‘teachers’ and about 8 learners.

I’ve been thinking about how best to go about it, and whether to start with a granny square or a granny stripe or a simple DC square.

Granny squares are easier to start and build quickly but use Trebles and chains and need a bit of attention to get the clusters in the right place.

Granny stripe starts with that awful starting chain which is so hard to get right as a beginner but once you’ve got past the first row of DC the TR pattern is quite pleasing and straightforward.

A simple DC square is again a pain to start but once got past that bit is just the same stitch back and forth.

What would you do? I think a combo of ch, dc and tr would give the best foundation but don’t want to put people off with the starting chain.

We’ll be using DK and 4mm hooks. Thanks in advance for any help!

Granny square every time. I hate trying to crochet into a starting chain, and I think it would be really tricky for a complete beginner. Whereas a square isn't daflty complicated and makes up fairly quickly. You can always mix up the stitches if they get the hang of it quite quickly.

Definitely a granny square. Carrying on and making a giant square is great for getting the rhythm of crocheting and you can easily add stitch patterns that only use, say, TC and chains.
