...if I just want to label boxes?
And do you recommend a 2nd hand one from eBay or is it best to buy new? Thank you 😊

Do you mean label with a pen? Or with vinyl? If it’s a pen I think that rules out the Joy (I’ve got a Maker so I’m not really familiar with the Joy). I’d always suggest going for the best one you can afford. You might only want to do labels now, but once you can see what they can do, you might regret not getting a larger machine.

And would definitely recommend buying new; you can get some fantastic deals and you know you’ll have a valid warranty if anything goes wrong. If you do go second hand though, don’t buy anything that mentions cartridges.

Thank you. That's really helpful. I meant labelling with vinyl. I didn't even know about the pens!

My sister has the Joy and uses it for labels and cards. She loves it and has no desire for anything else. I'll be getting the Maker.

Morasssassafras · 03/12/2021 06:54

I thought I'd just need the joy, because I just wanted to label things. I now have all 3.

Highly recommend doing some research on what the joy, explore air 2 and maker will each do. Facebook groups and YouTube have a ton of content. Once I'd joined/subscribed, after buying my joy, I discovered I really needed a bigger machine because the paper and card making possibilities are endless and I needed that in my life.

I was lucky that I didn't need the smart material capabilities of the explore 3 or maker 3 so was able to take my time and buy the cheaper machines when there were good deals on.

😆😆😆 I can see this being me!

Any recommendations on places that do good deals? I am willing to wait.

If you want to use vinyl, then I’d definitely go for either the Explore or the Maker. The Joy limits you in width which isn’t a problem for labels but will be a bugger if you decide to try Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV). The maker comes with a couple of mats, a black pen, a knife blade and a rotary blade for fabric (often mistaken for one of the card blades)

I did a bit of research on the Maker and decided it wasn’t worth the cost of upgrading from my Maker, but there are loads of comparison videos for all of the different machines on You Tube. Costco had deals on all last year but they’re a bit random. Hobby Craft have some good deals on. MDP and Hexis do some bundles for a good price. Just be aware of scammers because they do target Cricut. I’d suggest you join one of the FB groups and ask the members whether something seems legit before you buy it. They know what sites are legit and which aren’t.

If you decide on a bundle, you’ll need to see if it’s worth it. I don’t mind Cricut vinyl but loads of people think it’s utterly useless and have no use for it, so bear that in mind. Definitely avoid Hobby Craft vinyl though, it is shocking! I like Oracle 651 and Teckwrap. I get most of my vinyl from MDP but be aware that VAT isn’t added until the end and postage isn’t cheap, but if you bulk buy, it’s definitely one of the cheapest. Without a doubt you will definitely need a weeder, a pair of scissors, a scraper (can’t remember the proper name for it but it helps you apply the transfer tape to the vinyl) and a brayer (like a small decorator’s roller). You’ll need a green mat for vinyl (you can use blue but that’s designed for card so not quite as sticky as you’ll need) and some transfer tape. You can get all of this from Cricut but you can buy cheaper, non branded stuff on Amazon. The strong grip Cricut transfer tape is only really any good for glitter vinyl. I use the Cricut standard grip (it’s re-usable), book cover I got from Tesco for 50p a roll and masking tape. If you want to use HTV, you won’t need transfer tape (it comes already attached) and some kind of heat source. It’s possible to use an iron but not really recommended. I’ve got an easy press, a mini and a heatproof mat (you can use a folded towel). Some people prefer heat presses but you’ll need a bit of space for that.

You can download the free Cricut App (Design Space) now and have a play about with it. I don’t know if they still do, but when you add your machine to it, it used to give you a months free trial, then £7 something a month to subscribe. You must have Design Space but you absolutely do not have to subscribe. I do, but I largely work from my DH’s phone so don’t download svgs, so it’s worth it for me. There’s a mixture of designs that are free for everyone, free to subscribers only and chargeable to everyone, subscriber or not. Also, they have some Disney/Harry Potter designs on there that aren’t available to the European market.

If you’ve got any questions, feel free to shout 🙂

I got my Joy from Amazon and then bought the air 2 and maker, with bundles, directly from Cricut.com, you can select UK from the bottom of the website to get prices in £, and they then ship from Europe with UK plug. I was also watching Hobbycraft (where both my DILs got theirs), Rymans, and Amazon, I know John Lewis and Very also stock them, and I think Currys maybe. It depends whether you'd rather buy in person, and whether you are bothered about which colour you get (I was). Then its whether you want to buy the Cricut tools and some materials in a bundle with the machine, or if you'll go for the cheaper alternatives.

If you do go for Cricut.com the UK facebook group gives out a discount code quite regularly and if you have Cricut Access (a monthly subscription which gives you access to more content in Cricut Design Space), even the free trial, then you also get a discount.

I'd say it's also definitely worth downloading Design Space from the website and making sure it runs on whatever device you'll be using and that you get on with the software before buying the machine. I binge watched tutorial videos before the Joy even arrived so I'd already picked up loads of tips and tricks so I didn't waste too much material on craft fails, because things don't always go right first time.

CoffeeWithCheese · 03/12/2021 14:53

I'd go for an Air personally - the Joy accessories seem to attract a bit of a "dinky" price premium.

Rollergirl1980 · 03/12/2021 18:09

Sn0tnose and Morasssassafrass such detailed posts, thank you SO much. I have a lot of research to do now! That's a brilliant idea to lay about with the software first.

Hi all, Sorry to jump into the conversation but all sound really knowledgeable about the cricut! I have been looking into buying a cricut air and one has popped up on my local fb page, just wondering about the design space thing, can I use the cricut with photoshop & illustrator and print my designs to vinyl that way ?

CoffeeWithCheese · 04/12/2021 21:22

I often use procreate to make a design but then you need to import it into design space to send it to the machine at the very end.

Morasssassafras · 05/12/2021 09:10

As CoffewithCheese said you can create designs with other software but you do need to use design space to send to your cricut.

It is easiest if your other software will save/export to a .SVG file as it then imports/uploads to design space ready to go, even with complicated layered designs. I'm fairly certain one of the programs you specified will, but there are also free programs such as inkscape that will do this.

You can import/upload some other image files (jpeg etc) directly into design space but it can then take a LOT of work in design space to tidy them up ready for cutting. There are also various sites where you can buy ready made SVGs to use.

A joy would do for labels but you will probably be hooked and wnat to make more /upgrade.

I would get a maker.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 08/12/2021 21:32

Can I also say that there are loads of videos on YouTube showing you how to do stuff with the Cricut, how to use design space and crafts you can create.

I actually have a Silhouette Cameo but when I bought that Cricut was in its infancy and still using cartridges for designs whereas now Cricut has really cornered the crafting market.

I do have a Cricut easypress and I use Oracle 651 for vinyl. Mine came from CraftyCutter but I am just doing stuff for me, not selling things so don't need massive amounts. I am warning you now though, it is addictive Grin

Rollergirl1980 · 08/12/2021 22:01

Thanks for all these replies. I am filling up a Pinterest board with ideas already!
I like the advice to bypass the Joy as I probably will want to do more than labels eventually.
