Do you macrame?

Today I decided to use the bag of jingle bells I accidentally ordered to make a doggie doorbell for DS's puppy. It hangs on the door handle and they can learn to jingle it to go out.

It took a bit of mind juggling and Youtube learning to remember how to do the spiral knot, but it came back after my days of big macrame in the 1970s.

It turned out great and jingles perfectly.

I hope puppy learns it quickly!

What fun really.

This is adorable, made me smile when I couldn’t get back to sleep last night after getting up with the baby.
What’s your next project?

WhiteWhiteWhite · 11/11/2021 08:53

Love the doggie doorbell idea! Smile

Any tips for a complete macramé beginner? Not too complicated preferably. Or what/where materials to buy. Been meaning to have a go!

Not yet. DD wants to make a hanging plant holder for her bedroom. We got some twine but haven't tried yet.

Geneticsbunny · 11/11/2021 09:07

I did my first macrame this week and am really pleased with it.

Sounds great. Are you going to post a pic? I’ve been meaning to learn macrame, I crochet. And macrame might be easier for dd to learn first. She wanted me to teach her crochet so I tried but she couldn’t quite get it yet. Dd does enjoy tying things in knots. Sometimes I’ve had to untie her when she has tied herself to stuff Grin.

Can you use any twine or rope or does it need to be specific macrame twine or rope?

ImustLearn2Cook · 11/11/2021 09:18

@Geneticsbunny Awesome Smile Post a pic so we can see.

I sell on Etsy / socials and markets. Loads of resources on YouTube if you’re just looking to get started and make your own bits.

Doggie doorbell sounds cute, ours learned to nose the keys when he wants to go out, sounds cute but you’ll be sick of the bastard bell by new year Wink

It depends on what you’re making really. Twine will be hard on your hands but good for outdoor things. 3mm cotton cord is a good starting point, thickness of the cord depends on what you’re doing but 3mm is a good base for most beginner projects. Single twist is the best to brush out and get a fringe with, but I find triple twist easiest to worth with personally (apart from braided cord but this can’t be brushed out so I never use this).

Thx @SpiceRat Smile

Not a great pic. Just about to have a go at another one. Any tips or good places to learn unusual knots?

Looks great @Geneticsbunny I absolutely LOVE that colour.

Loads of resources on YouTube. Lots of Knots Canada is great, I find her instructions really helpful and easy to follow and she had a wads of videos.

Books that are good are macrame and macrame 2 by Fanny Zedenius are good too.

LoveFall · 11/11/2021 17:27

Here it is. Sorry the picture is sideways.

I have some beads to add next time after I find my yarn needle as the holes in the beads were not big enough to thread onto the cord without one.

All I needed was the cord, a ring for the top, and the bells. I used several sites to learn the spiral knot again, and how to tie off the bottom.

It only took about an hour. I remember making huge hanging plant holders, even with lights in it, back in the 70s.

@SpiceRat thanks. Lots of good videos on there.

Geneticsbunny · 11/11/2021 20:27

@LoveFall vey nice. I bet that was very satisfying to make.

LoveFall · 11/11/2021 22:49

It was very satisfying. Once I got the knack of it, it grew quickly.
