how can I make a nice Christmas card holder to display cards?

I normally just poke them in the edges of our picture frames etc, but would really like to display the cards on a string or something similar.

We have picutre rails in the house, though I could make something that made use of them.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!!

Have you small children? Easiest wayt would be to string them round the picture rail, using cotton and drawing pins, but if you have older kids you could try the Blue Peter route with clothes hangers and things.

I always display ours on lengths of ribbon hung vertically from the picture rail. I staple the cards on and make little bows at the top to cover the drawing pin.

I do the same as Megalegs but without the bow at the top (good idea BTW). I usually use a festive, i.e. tartan ribbon about 3" thick and staple cards at an angle.

Thanks for the ideas that's great!

My children are all under 5, so may not be much help with the coathanger business

When you hang then vertically do you do several short lengths round the rai? I'm thinking that I wouldn't be able to let them hang too low. Out of the reach of little hands and paws (kitten)

i do the ribbon thing too, does look nice!

tassisssss · 11/12/2007 20:14

Sorry, didn't see your last question. I always do mine floor to ceiling. I hadn't factored in my lovely 14 month old until you mentioned your kitten! Was planning to do this today but haven't so can't tell you how she'll be...

I do the ribbon thing but up the staircase - we don't have picture rails. I hang one length of ribbon for alternate spindles on the staircase.

Last year I cut out 8 shapes in card and got DS1 to stick cotton wool to each of them to make snowmen to hide the pin at the top of the ribbon they look really sweet with a little fine red ribbon round the neck for a scarf.

I have 2yr old twins and I guarantee if they can get their hands on them they'll rip the cards off! Especially my boy and he's a bit of a climbing expert too, so I might have to do the ribbon or cotton thing round the rail? Would it look naff if it just hung down 2 or 3 feet? Hmmmm ...

(as for all these lovely things you do to hind the pin at the opt, I hang my top card over the pin at the top!)

JingleyJen · 11/12/2007 20:21

tssisssss hmm never thought of that - Doh!!!

forkhandles · 11/12/2007 20:23

ooh so many good ideas! the snowmen sound cute, DD1 would love to make them!

Just to go off on a tangent; if you were giving teachers truffles for Christmas what would you put then in?

get some wooden washing pegs... string some ribbon or embroidery thread or other string through the springs... knot each one and space them about hands width apart...tie ends to curtain tops or stairs or wherever...hold cards up with pegs

TEUCHywithallthetrimmings · 11/12/2007 21:34

I have mini wooden pegs from ebay and gold twine...

forkhandles · 11/12/2007 21:42

wooden pegs - good idea, and reusable for next year too!!
