DH's cousin is having a baby next year - I want to knit her a blanket similar to the one I did for my DD but am struggling to choose colours - she doesn't know/is keeping to herself sex of baby...

I have spent weeks procrastinating & really need to get started but can't decide so please help me decide what colours to use. design means I need 2 contrasting colours - or 3 at a push

Shades to choose from are here

Why not do the lovely blue shades but decorate with hearts or stars, which are pretty unisex?

coldtits · 07/12/2007 23:06

Vanilla cream and pure white.

RudolphtheBluenosesaintdeer · 07/12/2007 23:09

Definitely white ...nothing cuter than white for a newborn

RudolphtheBluenosesaintdeer · 07/12/2007 23:11

Ooops sorry, just realised you need 2 colours

I like the pale green to go with the white, very pretty ...

imaginewittynamehere · 07/12/2007 23:35

Great suggestions thank-you all - now torn between white & vanilla & adding a gender specific border after the baby is born & white & green....

Can I just say, I have used that Sirdar cotton and it's a pure bugger to knit with - it splits terribly.
Could you use another DK cotton and get different shades?

Miaou · 08/12/2007 09:18

I was about to add that prunie - have just knitted a cotton blanket and used some of that yarn - never again!! Debbie Bliss cotton is a much better construction and about the same price.

I would go for white and calico or white and green myself

Miaou · 08/12/2007 09:19

(which one are you doing - can you share the pattern?)

DutchOma · 08/12/2007 09:43

I would do indigo with lilac and raspberry, but I've never knitted with this cotton,

Astrophe · 08/12/2007 09:46

Hi dutchoma

Astrophe · 08/12/2007 09:47

Indigo and Sage

Miaou · 08/12/2007 13:15

Mmm yes that indigo is a lovely colour - I overlooked that one before! Makes a lovely statement.

DutchOma · 08/12/2007 14:00

Hi Astrophe How are you? Has your mum sent any knitting over?

Astrophe · 08/12/2007 15:23

No, not yet! I shall hint for Chrissy

imaginewittynamehere · 08/12/2007 16:16

Thanks - I haven't used the sirdar cotton before either so maybe I need to re-evaluate... As an alternative has anyone used rowan handknit cotton?

Blanket is going to be single colour afgan squares then sewn together with a crocheted border.

I crocheted the whole of D's & haven't finally decided on knitting or crocheting of the squares for this one.

I have this for the blanket I'm planning & used this for the one for dd - both are fantastic

I'll try to add a photo of dd's blanket tomy profile later

It's beautiful! Do you think that book would be good for a novice knitter as I'd love to try something similar?

OhGiveUsAPruniPudding · 08/12/2007 17:40

It's lovely! I like the green especialy.
I have used Rowan Handknit DK to make a jumper for ds - it's good. It machine washes well. The Sirdar hasn't got much of a twist to it and the fibres seem silkier, hence the splitting. Both Rowan and Debbie Bliss are a different experience. I like Debbie Bliss too. And tbh the Rowan and DB colours are nicer but that's entirely a matter of taste!

Norksdrift - book should be fine for a novice - I'm not much up from that & managed fine - I use the net for any stitches I'm not familiar with - the beauty of squares is that you can practise - with all of them I think I made the first one then pulled it apart once I knew what I was doing iyswim.

Pruni - I feel another trip to the yarn shop coming on & you're right they both have nicer colours it's just I can get the Sirdar for 2.15 - but it's no saving if it's a beast to work with!!

Thanks both for admiring blanket - it was a labour of love - I finished it in hospital 3 hours before going into labour - good timing eh ;)

Blanket is beautiful - well done! I ahve used Jan eaton's book to augment my block repertoire when making my dd's blanket (see profile) but not come across that particular book - looks great! I think the instructions in her books are fab - really concise and easy to follow.

lionheart · 09/12/2007 16:04

I've been using that book, Norskdrift and I'm a novice. It does explain the knitting basics and it's very good for trying out new techniques.
