Is this knitted, or crochet - and can it be repaired? Please help :)

I have this top which was made by my DGM. I don't know if it is knitted or crochet and I can't ask my gran because she died a while ago. I love this top, and it is also special because it is one of the few things I have left that she made for me.

It's got a hole in somehow, and I can see a loose thread. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to repair it myself and maybe point me in the direction of a utube video where I can learn what I need to know? I don't want to just have a go and either ruin it or make a hash of it. Thanks Smile

Knitted and yes.
Firstly catch the loop with some sewing thread to stop it running further and catch the ends.
Then ask a knitter to do it.

The dropped stitch needs taking up with a crochet hook and thr ends need darning in

It's knitted, do you know how to knit? If not repairing lace knitting on a precious is probably not the ideal thing to start with. Do you have a local wool shop? If so I would try having a chat to them to see if they offer repairs or if they know anyone who can help, be prepared to pay. If you want to have a go yourself I would suggest joining Ravelry and asking in the forums, there will be some helpful knitters there I'm sure. Good luck.

@Helenluvsrob ..oh thank you for replying and I am so happy to hear it is not completely ruined. I have put some doubled up cotton in the loop I thought you meant ... did I get it right?

Definitely get a really good knitter to do it. I'm a pretty competent knitter and I'd be hesitant at trying to sort something that delicate and precious out tbh!

Viviennemary · 02/10/2021 12:19

I agree with asking an expert knitter to have a go. Don't do it yourself.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/10/2021 12:20

Yes definitely doable by someone who understands lace knitting, though the repair could not be completely invisible.

@BigRedBoat I know how to do basic knitting, plain stitch and purl (sp?) stitch but nothing more fancy than that. I live in Spain so language might be a bit of a barrier for me, but there is a wool shop in a town near our village, so I will take it there and show them it, and hope that the hole kind of explains itself Smile along with the words "ayudame por favor". Fingers crossed!

Thank you all for your advice, at least now I know it is lace knitting , I never knew that before.

I won't try to do it myself and will hope to find someone who understands the technique. I would rather never wear it again and pack it away with the hole so it doesn't get worse, than ruin it myself

I can see one thread broken, which you would need to repair with something. Otherwise, it looks as though two stitches were dropped, so if you start with one and then keep looping through until you get to the complete part, and then sew off, then go back to the dropped stitch and do the same again, it should be possible.

@Biffatcrafts what a beautiful knitted top. Your DGM was amazingly talented. I agree with the others, find a very good knitter to mend it. Good luck Smile
