Not sure I understand - are the squares knitted and in which stitch?

i normally sew everything up with the same yarn used for knitting. But isn't blanket stitch an edging stitch - or were you being ironic ?

grannyslippers - squares are knitted in lots of different stitches. Ooops, and I meant mattress stitch! Sorry was rather tired when I posted last night!

It's a commissioned piece so I want to get the finish as near perfect as possible. I have always sewn up using the same yarn (as far as possible) but was wondering if it might be better with cotton thread.

I think, go with yarn, using the smoothest/most neutral colour of the ones in the squares. Sewing cotton doesn't sort of have the same karma - it will be a silly little needle and split the yarn won't it?

Blanket, mattress - easy to get confused you must have been wanting your bed too much!

lol, yes, my subconscious telling me to go to bed last night I think

You are right about the needle thing; will stick with yarn I think!
