Knitting question from a (total) beginner

Please humour me for asking such a daft question but how do I start a new ball of wool when knitting? I've only learnt the basics (from a book) but can't find this anywhere

I just stop the old ball at the end of a row when it still has a long 'tail' and start the next row with the new ball. Leave another long 'tail' and sew them into the edge when you have finished.
I'll keep an eye on this for better advice but that seems to work for me.

That's what I do too.

I mean to leave the other long 'tail' on the new ball.

So I don't attach the new 'tail' to anything? Does it hold ok? Sorry I'm a total novice!

It holds fine.
Once you've done a few stitches it is well and truely 'linked in'. Then, when you've finished you secure it so that it doesn't get pulled.

Thank you
My first project was a little hat (pic on profile if you're interested - I am irrationally proud of it ) but now I want to try something stripey!!

Very impressed with your little hat.
When I tried to re-teach myself I had over-the-phone lessons from my mum. Not easy when, despite us both being right handed, she knits left handed and never realised until I showed her the instructions in the book I bought! (Her left-handed aunt taught her and she never knew that it made a difference.) Good luck with your future projects

If you're doing something stripey, then you do it in a different way. If the stripes are close together - say about 4 rows of each colour, then you just carry the second ball of wool up the side when you are knitting the new colour. Wind the first thread around the second thread at the side to hold it in neatly. Then the second ball is ready when you want to start a new stripe. Does that make sense? Otherwise you have a million ends to sew in!

Oh nomore, I abandoned you! All good advice on here though. Now, bet you can't wait for your ravelry invite, can you??
