My sewing machine is a noisy old thing so I’ve taken to sewing by hand so I can watch Netflix at the same time Grin anyone else sew dresses/skirts by hand?

That is so pretty!

Thank you so much, it’s not perfect but I’m very happy with this one. I’d love to see other peoples hand sewn makes and alterations.

Yeah I prefer hand sewing. More meditative, less noisy, don't need to set up the table space and can be more comfy sitting back on the sofa. But for things like curtains etc sewing machine is best

Oh that's fab @Strawberryhaze. Love the fabric
. You'll have fun wearing that.

But sadly, no, I couldn't see the stitches.

Gorgeous skirt @Strawberryhaze

I hand sew details- i made a dress and hand sewed top stitching along the neckline which made it look really tailored. I might hem and cuff my new coat by hand. I'm just too impatient to make entire garments by hand though!

Cute Strawberry, thanks for sharing. I love a cheesy Halloween skirt. I couldn’t see the stitches though.

I’d love to bec’s me to handset but no matter how I try I can’t be beat.

Near!

Not for clothes, apart from tacking seams the old-fashioned way. I would be too worried about a seam bursting when I sat down! Grin

But I do hand sew patchwork quilts. It's mainly for convenience as I can sew individual squares or different shapes, then nine patch blocks and keep them contained in shoe boxs before I sew the whole quilt together. I saw an exhibition of pioneer quilts in the USA dating back to the 1840s, and I assumed that the stitches would be tiny and expert, but they were pretty rough up close tbh!

I sometimes hand sew hems but find that stitching is a small fraction of the work, anyhow. I can spend half an hour pinning and pressing for a 2-5 minute machine stitching session. Ig it's a fiddly seam, I go dead slow (my machine has a speed control, which helps) and then it's pretty quiet.

Lovely skirt OP. I hand stitch patchwork quilts, for the same reason as @Thewaythroughthewoods but rely on my sewing machine for anything else. the stitch reinforcement, even tension and speed do it for me
