Knitted first jumper. Sewing up help please!

Hello, I've done a lot of knitting projects over the years but never actually finished anything. My daughter is leaving for university on Friday so I've been working on a jumper for her to take with her.

I've knitted it all (with a bit of you tube help 😁) but I'm really struggling with the sewing up. I've joined up the shoulder seams but I really don't understand how to attach the sleeves. I've got a horrible feeling I've done something wrong as the sleeves don't look similar to anything I can see on you tube.

Can anyone give me any tips please as I really would love to be able to finish it before she goes away!

I am not knitting but a do sew and this is how shoulders are normally done so would think it will be same with knitted jumper, hope it makes sense,
Fold sleeve to find centre, match that with shoulder seam and sew as instructed.
Once that's done just close the side seams starting at one shoulder seam doing down and closing the shoulder, keep going down closing the side jumper seam. Repeat on other side.

Can you post a link to the pattern? I find this but tricky and always have to watch a YouTube video! YouTube is your friend!

Yarn looks lovely BTW, what is it?

Hungry675tf · 22/09/2021 12:31

@onedream post makes sense to me

mynotfinkso · 22/09/2021 12:36

Thank you both! I thought that was how it would go but was a bit confused by the I instructions to sew for 22cm.

I've probably done something silly but the pattern is for a ladies sweater in King Cole super chunky yarn but the wool I've used is Cygnet seriously chunky in Macaw. I'll try and find a link but I'm as good at technology as I am at sewing up knitting 😂

Sounds like this jumper is straight up the side with no shaping to the armholes. The measurement given (22-26cm) is the distance from the shoulder to the underarm, i.e. how much of the side will be taken up by the sleeve.

Centre the top of the sleeve on the shoulder seam. Then pin the the two sides of the sleeve to the correct distance down on the front and back. Neatly sew them together with a flat seam. Then sew up the side and down the sleeve in one seam, on each side (as @onedream's excellent diagram)

mynotfinkso · 22/09/2021 12:43

NotMeNoNo sorry to be so dense. Does that mean 11cm each side from the centre (if you see what I mean) and how do I sew in the bumps where I had to cast off? 😭

Can't do links but this is the jumper. I've done the round neck one but all in one colour.

I always use mattress stitch when sewing up knitting. Fold the sleeve in half tack the centre to the centre of the shoulder seam. Tack both igf the underarms in place on the sides of the front and back and check they line up. Sew sleeve top in place then sew up the side seam (front and back) and it will neatly follow through along the underside of the sleeve. You can use a whip stitch or just a running stitch but learning mattress stitch (You Tube is great) has really improved my finished jumpers it's also really eady to undo if you're not happy

Verbena87 · 22/09/2021 13:10

Mattress stitch will kind of eat up any lumpy edges, and it’s not hard after a few YouTube watches and taking it steady. Really recommend it.

Great jumper - I have 2 made from the one my grandma knitted my dad around the same age (was a similar style but man sized, so I unraveled and skeined it, and managed 2 from the wool). Nest-flying jumpers can really be heirlooms.

sorry, got sidetracked by work.
The sleeve matches up like the diagram.
they give you the measurement so it doesn't end up stretched/lopsided but it should match up reasonably.

To sew main seams, use mattress stitch, with the pieces laid flat and edge to edge.

it's always tricky sewing sleeves in where the knitting is in different directions on each side,
this might help

You need to pick up a strand just inside the bump rather than right on the edge of it, so it looks smooth from the front.

mynotfinkso · 22/09/2021 16:09

Thanks everyone. I think what was confusing me was the measurements but I think that's probably because I used a different yarn and they are totally different to the actual measurements of the jumper! So I think I know what I'm doing now. I hope so anyway 😂

Fingers crossed it'll be finished by Friday now 😁

A really chunky knit is great instant gratification isn't it?

VienneseWhirligig · 22/09/2021 16:17

I'd use mattress stitch like pp suggested, it will hide the bumps and look very neat.

Hungry675tf · 22/09/2021 16:18

Can you send us a pic when you've finished? Would love to see it Smile

mynotfinkso · 22/09/2021 16:57

NotMeNoNo I've really enjoyed knitting it! I'm already planning the next one. I've tried so many times to make things but I've always given up because I don't knit very quickly so they never seemed to grow. This has been brilliant though 😁

I'll certainly post a photo if I can get it all to fit together 😁

Thanks again everyone
